worldsteel Elects New Officers; Welcomes New Members
06 October 2010 - The Board of Directors of the World Steel Association has elected new officers for 2010/2011 as well as the 2010/11 Executive Committee. The Board also welcomed several companies as new members of worldsteel.
Nippon Steel, Ternium to Establish HDG Joint Venture in Mexico
06 October 2010 - Nippon Steel and Ternium sign a definitive agreement to form a joint venture in Mexico for the manufacture and sale of hot-dip galvanized and galvannealed steel sheets to serve the Mexican automobile market. Ternium will hold a 51% interest in the new venture, with Nippon Steel holding the remaining 49%.
worldsteel Provides Short Range Outlook for Steel Industry
05 October 2010 - The World Steel Association forecasts in its October 2010 short range outlook (SRO) for 2010 and 2011 that apparent steel use will increase by 13.1% to 1,272 million tonnes in 2010 after declining by 6.6% in 2009. This represents an improvement of 35 million tonnes over the April SRO for 2010, exceeding the pre-crisis peak of 1,222 million tonnes in 2007.
Ruukki Secures Bridge Contract in Sweden
04 October 2010 - Ruukki and NCC Construction Sverige have agreed to the delivery and installation of steel structures for a bridge to be built at Motala in Sweden. Ruukki will also have a role in the design solutions for the 620-meter-long bridge.
Böhler Edelstahl Opens Facility with Largest Rotary Forging Machine
04 October 2010 - Böhler Edelstahl GmbH&CoKG completed in late September 2010 the largest investment project so far at the Kapfenberg site in Austria with the opening of the new ProForge hall. The company claims that the largest rotary forging machine in the world is housed in the production facility.
Posco Named Carbon-Performance Leader
04 October 2010 - Posco received overall good evaluations from the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) committee on carbon disclosure and reduction efforts, and was selected as a leader in carbon disclosure and carbon performance.
ThyssenKrupp Heads Plans for East African Rail Project
01 October 2010 - Project managers at ThyssenKrupp GfT Gleistechnik GmbH have been working on the railway link between Southern Sudan and Uganda, in a consultancy and supporting role for the New Sudan Foundation, which on behalf of the Southern Sudan government GOSS worked to realize this transport route.
MMK Passes Recertification Audit of Environmental Management System
01 October 2010 - TUV Nord Cert GmbH conducted a recertification audit of the environmental management system at Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK). The auditors found that the system meets ISO 14001 requirements, so MMK will receive a new certificate of compliance for another three-year period.

Tata Steel Executes Agreements to Refinance European Operations
30 September 2010 - Tata Steel UK Holdings signed a Senior Facility Agreement with a syndicate of 13 banks for a £3.53 billion term loan and revolving credit facility that is intended to replace in full the current term loan and revolving credit facilities entered into at the acquisition of Corus Group plc in 2007.

30 September 2010 - voestalpine Stahl GmbH’s was made a klima:aktiv partner by Environmental Minister DI Niki Berlakovich in recognition of its contribution to CO2 emissions reduction: The company reduced CO2 emissions in a cutting unit area by 500 tonnes a year by optimizing its internal logistics.

Outokumpu Aims to Save Energy at Tornio Site
29 September 2010 - Outokumpu has implemented an energy saving project at the Tornio Works production site in Finland that involves replacing 50 separate refrigeration compressors in the cold rolling plant with a new centralized district cooling system, expected to be in use by the end of 2011.
Siemens Modernizes Qatar Steelworks
29 September 2010 - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has won an order to modernize Qatar Steel Co.'s steelworks in Mesaieed, Qatar, with the goal of expanding billet production capacity by up to 30% while reducing specific consumption values and waste gas emissions.
Corus Begins Transition to Tata Steel Name, Identity
28 September 2010 - Corus is adopting Tata Steel as its new identity, beginning immediately. Corus joined the Tata Steel family in April 2007, creating one of the world’s largest steelmakers.

ThyssenKrupp Reaches Production Milestone at Duisburg-Beeckerwerth Meltshop
28 September 2010 - The Beeckerwerth BOF meltshop of ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe in Duisburg recently produced its 200 millionth tonne of crude steel. The meltshop has a capacity of 5.9 million tonnes of steel per year with an average heat weight of 265 tonnes.
NLMK Upgrades Transformer Steel Facilities
28 September 2010 - Production has commenced at a new facility producing electric insulation coating for transformer steel at NLMK's main site in Lipetsk. The launch of the 60,000 tonnes-per-annum line is another step toward manufacturing nanostructured high-permeability transformer steel in 2011.
ArcelorMittal Ostrava Invests in Screens to Reduce Noise in Bartovice
27 September 2010 - Four anti-noise screens separate the marshaling yard from the residential zone at Bartovice, erected along the railway track where trains are marshaled and transferred to the ArcelorMittal Ostrava railway siding. The fourth anti-noise screen of nearly 400 meters in length was just recently commissioned.
Tenova Meltshop at Ishvesk Starts Up
27 September 2010 - The new Tenova Melting complex located at Izhevsk steelworks in Udmurtia Republic, Russia, was started up on September 7. Tenova’s contract covered a full-scale upgrading of the meltshop n°23 of Izhstal OAO plant, owned by the Mechel group.
