Outokumpu Aims to Save Energy at Tornio Site

Outokumpu has implemented an energy saving project at its Tornio Works production site in Finland that involves replacing 50 separate refrigeration compressors in the cold rolling plant with a new centralized district cooling system. The annual electricity consumption is expected to be reduced by 11 GWh and carbon dioxide emissions decreased by 6700 tonnes.

New cooling towers and a heat exchanger for free cooling will be installed to replace the current electricity-driven compressors in the cold rolling plant. Two absorption coolers that utilize process waste heat as primary energy and two turbo-chillers will also be installed. With the new system, the electricity needed in the cooling process is decreased from 15 GWh to 3.9 GWh, according to Outokumpu.

As part of the financing, the Finnish Government has granted a subsidy of almost EUR 2 million to the project.

The new system is expected to be in use by the end of 2011.
