Siemens Modernizes Qatar Steelworks

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has won an order to modernize Qatar Steel Co.'s steelworks in Mesaieed, Qatar, with the goal of expanding billet production capacity by up to 30% while reducing specific consumption values and waste gas emissions.

The modernized plant is scheduled to start production in mid 2012. The order is in the double-digit million euro range.

Siemens is supplying a 95-tonne electric arc furnace, a 95-tonne ladle furnace, a five-strand continuous billet casting plant, and the associated ancillary equipment for the steelworks in Mesaieed Industrial City, located about 50 km south of Doha, the capital of Qatar.

A new dedusting plant is also being installed in the works, which will reduce emissions from steel production. The supply scope includes a system for charging the electric arc furnace with DRI and alloying facilities as well.

The project is being implemented jointly by Siemens VAI Metals Technologies and Siemens W.L.L. Qatar. Siemens Qatar will be responsible for all the local services.
