Carpenter Technology, Sandvik Partner in Powder Technology

20 October 2010 - Carpenter Technology Corp. and Sandvik Materials Technology have established a strategic partnership to mutually reinforce each company’s long-term commitment in powder metal products. Carpenter Technology will acquire a 40% interest in Sandvik Powdermet AB, and Sandvik AB will acquire a 40% interest in Carpenter Powder Products AB.

Nippon Steel Establishes Automotive Steel Pipe Business in India

20 October 2010 - Nippon Steel Corp. has established a new automotive steel pipe business in India, Nippon Pipe India Private Ltd, to capture growing demand there. In the state of Rajasthan in the northern part of India, Siam Nippon Steel Pipe Co., Ltd. will build a base for manufacturing and selling electric-welded pipes for two- and four-wheeled motor vehicles.

Praxair China Extends Partnership with Meishan Steel

19 October 2010 - Praxair China and Meishan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. have signed an agreement to modify and expand their long-term supply contract, with Praxair China increasing its oxygen, nitrogen, and argon capacities in Nanjing to meet Meishan Steel's growing demand.

BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto Terminate Iron Ore Production JV

19 October 2010 - BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto have jointly decided to end plans for an iron ore production joint venture in the Pilbara in Western Australia following extensive discussions with regulators. Both parties have been advised recently that the proposal would not be approved in its current form.

SSAB to Establish R&D Facility in China

18 October 2010 - SSAB will build a Research and Development Facility in Kunshan, China, as part of its strategy to establish a strong footprint in Asia. The new facility is expected to begin operations in the third quarter 2011.

JFE Steel, GMH Holding Agree to Technical Collaboration

18 October 2010 - JFE Steel Corp. has concluded an agreement with Georgsmarienhütte (GMH) Holding GmbH of Germany concerning technical collaboration on steel products mainly focused on steel bars to be used for the energy field, typically for wind power.

Evraz Group Reports 3Q 2010 Results

18 October 2010 - Evraz Group S.A. has released its operational results for the third quarter of 2010, including increased EBITDA guidance due to shorter-than-expected downtime and improvement in Russian domestic pricing of construction products in September. The company has increased it from US$480-550 million to US$550-600 million.

Posco Restarts Retrofitted No. 4 Furnace at Pohang Steelworks

18 October 2010 - Posco celebrated last week the furnace firing ceremony for the upgraded No. 4 Blast Furnace at Pohang Steelworks. The company expects the expanded furnace, which now has an inner volume of 5600m3, to produce 5.31 million tonnes of molten iron per year in the future.

Outokumpu Launches New Duplex Steel Grade

14 October 2010 - Outokumpu has launched a new duplex stainless steel grade that it claims features a higher mechanical strength than major duplex grades on the market. The new grade, Outokumpu LDX 2404®, is said to enable thinner gauges to be employed in a variety of applications.

SMS Mevac to Supply Duplex RH Plant to Masteel

14 October 2010 - Maanshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., located in Maanshan, China, has awarded SMS Mevac a contract for the supply of a duplex RH plant with burner lance system. Commissioning of the duplex RH plant is scheduled for the second half of 2011.

JSW Reports 8% Growth in Crude Steel Production in First Half of FY11

13 October 2010 - JSW Steel Limited reported the production of 3.14 million tonnes of crude steel in the first half of fiscal year 2011, representing a growth of 8% compared to comparable year-ago period. Flat rolled and long products production grew by 32% and 44%, respectively, over the same period.

SMS Meer to Supply ArcelorMittal Hochfeld with Wire Rod Mill

Outokumpu Ironworks in Degerfors Celebrates Anniversary

12 October 2010 - Georg Camitz started iron production by the river Letälven in Degerfors, Sweden, 350 years ago, laying the foundation of the Outokumpu ironworks. In addition to a dispatch hall inaugurated a year ago, Outokumpu is now investing 104 million euro in the production of special-grade quarto plate in Degerfors.
