AISI Urges Response to Court Decision Limiting Application of CV Duties

23 December 2011 - American Iron and Steel Institute President and CEO Thomas J. Gibson issued a statement regarding a U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruling this week to strike down the U.S. Commerce Department’s application of countervailing duties against subsidized products, including steel, from China.

October Steel Shipments Down 0.2% from September

21 December 2011 - U.S. steel mills shipped 7,933,653 net tons for the month of October 2011, a 0.2% decrease from the 7,947,262 net tons shipped in the previous month according to the latest report from AISI.

November World Crude Steel Production Slips from Previous Month

21 December 2011 - World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association stood at an estimated 115.51 million tonnes for November 2011, 6.8% lower than the 123.98 million tonnes reported for the previous month (October 2011) and 1.1% higher in comparison with November 2010.

Metal Shipment Growth Slows in November

21 December 2011 - Service center shipments grew at slightly slower rates in November for both steel and aluminum in the U.S. and Canada, according to the latest Metals Activity Report from the Metals Service Center Institute. Steel inventory levels declined in the U.S. and Canada from last month.

USITC Reaches Decision on Stainless Wire Rod from India

19 December 2011 - The U.S. International Trade Commission determined that revoking the existing antidumping duty order on stainless steel wire rod from India would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time. Therefore, the existing order on imports of this product from India will remain in place.

Stainless Imports up 31% Through YTD September 2011

15 December 2011 - Total stainless imports reached 606,917 tons through YTD September 2011, a 30.9% increase compared to YTD September 2010 according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 773,137 tons through the same period, a 30.3% increase.

USITC to Continue Cases on Welded Carbon Steel Pipe from India, Oman, UAE, and Vietnam

12 December 2011 - The U.S. Department of Commerce will continue to conduct its antidumping and countervailing duty investigations on imports of circular welded carbon-quality steel pipe from India, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam based on the USITC’s finding of reasonable indication of material injury due to imports of these products.

Steel Import Permits Down 14% in November

09 December 2011 - Steel import permit applications totaled 1,984,000 net tons for the month of November, a 14% decrease from the 2,309,000 permit tons recorded in October according to the latest report from AISI.

USITC Makes Decision on Cut-to-Length Carbon Steel Plate

06 December 2011 - The U.S. International Trade Commission determined that revoking the existing antidumping and countervailing duty orders on cut-to-length carbon-quality steel plate from India, Indonesia, and Korea would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time. The existing orders on imports of these products from Italy and Japan will be revoked as a result of the Commission's negative determinations.

Preliminary Finished Steel Imports Up 4% in October

23 November 2011 - The U.S. imported a total of 2,192,000 net tons of steel in October, down 3% vs. September final data according to the latest report from AISI. Finished steel imports were up 4% through the same period.

World Crude Steel Production Rebounds Slightly in October

22 November 2011 - World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association stood at an estimated 123.98 million tonnes for October 2011, 0.3% higher than the 123.57 million tonnes reported for the previous month (September 2011) and 6.2% higher in comparison with October 2010.

AK Steel Announces Stainless Steel Price Increase

18 November 2011 - AK Steel announced plans to increase base prices for all 200, 300 and 400 series flat rolled stainless steel products, effective with shipments on January 1, 2012.
