Fenix Project Pushes AHMSA's Production to Record Level in 2013

This meant record operating levels across different departments of the company, including BOFs 1 and 2, transportation of liquid steel, and continuous casting line for plates and heavy profiles , among others, for a total loading of 3,554,307 tons of finished product.

The operational progress made during the year highlighted the launch of the new plate steckel mill on 18 July 2013, which in the last few months of the year had a production of about 80,000 tons of plate.

AHMSA’s hot and cold rolled sheet, tinned sheet, structural profiles, and cut and coiled plate products are mainly sold into the construction, metalworking, automotive, white goods and oil industries.

Luis Zamudio Miechielsen, director general of AHMSA and its subsidiaries, said that the successful operating outcome was due to the joint effort of the staff of the steel mills and iron and coal mines, and noted that with the new steckel mill, AHMSA has secured a leadership position as a reliable supplier of steel for the metal mechanical industry.

He said that despite the negative impact of declining international steel prices and the entry of unfairly traded imports, AHMSA sustained levels of operation that allowed it to maintain its workforce and its competitiveness internationally.

He stressed the continued development of the company’s Fenix Project, in its final stage, will install an electric arc furnace unit which will be completed in the coming months increasing the overall capacity of the company and bringing a range of new steels to niche market.
