Plant Tour — February 2020 On Thursday, 13 February 2020, Ronald J. O’Malley, F. Kenneth Iverson Chair Professor in Steelmaking Technologies and director, Kent D. Peaslee Steelmaking Manufacturing Research Center, Missouri University of Science and Technology, and 2019–2020 AIST president, hosted the St. Louis Member Chapter for a tour of the Missouri University of Science and Technology’s metallurgy lab in Rolla, Mo., USA. Laura Bartlett, Wolf Associate Professor of Metallurgical Engineering, provided an overview of facilities to the 13 attendees on the tour. Dinner Meeting — January 2017 The AIST St. Louis Member Chapter’s Alton Steel Night Dinner Meeting took place on Wednesday, 25 January 2017 at the Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, Ill., USA. Wendell Carter, vice president and general manager ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor, and AIST 2016–2017 president gave a keynote address titled “ArcelorMittal’s Role in Steel Industry Challenges.” Jim Hrusovsky, chief executive officer, Alton Steel Inc. (ASI), provided a short update presentation on ASI. St. Louis Member Chapter chair Mike Cook, Alton Steel, took a moment to acknowledge the people that helped ASI get started after the Laclede Steel bankruptcy. There were 75 people in attendance. |

The keynote presentation, titled “Conserving Energy in Manufacturing,” was presented by Don Ballard and Brian Young, energy team members at Olin Brass. The presentation provided an overview of the brass mill’s energy usage and how it has decreased usage by 11.4% in four years. There were 40 attendees at the dinner. |

Steak Fry Social — September 2014 The St. Louis Member Chapter’s annual steak fry networking event was held on Wednesday, 17 September 2014 at the Edwardsville Gun Club in Edwardsville, Ill., USA. There were 65 attendees who participated in the “cook your own steak” event and networked with steel industry colleagues. |
Golf Outing — June 2014 The St. Louis Member Chapter’s 41st annual golf outing was held on Tuesday, 3 June 2014 at the Lockhaven Country Club in Godfrey, Ill. There were 108 participants in the outing, which helps to raise money for the St. Louis Member Chapter’s new scholarship fund. This scholarship, established in 2014, will award one US$1,500 scholarship each year. |
Golf Outing — May 2014 On 10 May 2014, a golf tournament was held between Alton Steel Inc. and local vendors. The tournament included 26 teams. Participating companies sponsored holes at the event to benefit the newly established St. Louis Member Chapter Scholarship. In addition to the hole sponsorships, one of the participating teams donated its winnings back to the fund. In total, US$1,500 was raised to benefit the St. Louis Member Chapter Scholarship. |

Dinner Meeting — January 2014 The St. Louis Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the DoubleTree by Hilton Collinsville in Collinsville, Ill., on Wednesday, 22 January 2014. The topic was the U. S. Steel – Granite City Cogeneration Facility. The keynote presentation was given by Gregory Baker, area manager of energy and utility operations at U. S. Steel – Granite City Works. There were 70 attendees at the dinner. The St. Louis Member Chapter also announced its newly established scholarship, which will provide a one-year, US$1,500 scholarship to a student in the region. |

The outing was initially scheduled for 4 June 2013, but was moved to 25 June 2013 due to road flooding. Despite the rescheduled date, a good time was had by the 104 participants in this year’s outing. The winning teams had scores of 13 under and 6 under. |
Plant Tour — April 2013 The St. Louis Member Chapter hosted a tour of Olin Brass – Didion Machine on Wednesday, 24 April 2013. Following the tour, attendees enjoyed dinner and presentations on the Didion Machine at the Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, Ill. There were 77 attendees at the event. |
Dinner Meeting — February 2013 On Wednesday, 27 February 2013, the St. Louis Member Chapter hosted an Alton Steel Night dinner meeting at the Sunset Hills Country Club. The keynote speaker for the event was James Moss, co-founder, First River Consulting. The presentation was entitled, “Where Steel’s Future Comes From.” First River Consulting specializes in strategy for steel and other capital-intensive manufacturing industries. There were 52 attendees at the dinner. |
Young Engineers Night Dinner Meeting — January 2013 The AIST St. Louis Member Chapter hosted a Young Engineers Night panel discussion on Wednesday, 23 January 2013 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Collinsville, Ill. The panel featured Ryan Fitzpatrick, Christopher Keuss, Nick Yovandich and Matt Finan, all from U. S. Steel – Granite City Works. The panelists discussed the following projects: the BOF vessel refractory taphole block stand, coiler hydraulic system modifications and emergency acid shutoff system. There were 61 attendees at the dinner, including AIST president, Kent Peaslee, and several students from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. |
