Annual Forecast Meeting — January 2017 The AIST Southern California Member Chapter hosted its annual forecast meeting at California Steel Industries Inc. in Fontana, Calif., USA, on Thursday, 26 January 2017. Chapter vice chair Mario Campa, California Steel Industries Inc., served as the master of ceremonies for the 39 attendees. The evening included a social hour, dinner and a steel outlook presentation by Ricardo Bernardes, executive vice president, commercial, California Steel Industries. Vocational Student Tour, Roundtable Discussion and Dinner — October 2015 The Southern California Member Chapter hosted a vocational student tour, California Steel Industries Inc. (CSI) electrical and mechanical intern roundtable discussion, and dinner on Thursday, 22 October 2015 at CSI in Fontana, Calif., USA. With students, vendors and CSI personnel, there was a total of 82 for dinner in the new Steel Way Café. The student participants toured CSI’s hot mill, pickle line, 5-stand cold reduction mill and No. 2 galvanizing line. The roundtable discussion was lively and informative, and touched on CSI’s mechanical internship program for 2016. Rod Hoover, human resources manager from CSI, opened the roundtable discussion with a history of the intern program at CSI and some of the expectations of the people who may participate. |

The Southern California Chapter hosted a golf outing the following day at Jurupa Hills Country Club in Riverside, Calif., USA. The golf outing was nearly sold out with 140 participants. |
Student Project Presentation Night Dinner Meeting — April 2015 On Thursday, 30 April 2015, the Southern California Member Chapter hosted its annual student project presentation night dinner meeting at the California Steel Industries Inc. cafeteria in Fontana, Calif., USA. Sixteen students presented four different topics concerning metals. One of the presentations dealt with metals used for hip and knee transplants and how the body naturally erodes the metal. A total of 34 attendees enjoyed listening to the challenges faced with pitting and erosion of metals and ways to prevent or slow down this process. |

Student Presentation Night — November 2014 On Thursday, 6 November 2014, the Southern California Member Chapter hosted an Engineering Students Night, with 31 students from Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and 24 other attendees. The attendees toured the hot mill, pickle line, cold reduction mill and No. 2 galvanizing line at California Steel Industries (CSI) in Fontana, Calif., USA. Following the tour, Richard Bastar IV of Nalco Co. gave a presentation titled “Water Treatment and Its Applications in the Steel Industry.” Also at the event, a panel of young CSI engineers and metallurgists participated in a question and answer session, during which students were encouraged to ask questions regarding transition into working for a steel company and what training CSI provides. Panelists included Colin Welshymer, Tom Krenek, Neal Hardin and Ryan Barrows — all California Steel Industries employees. |

Western Conference — March 2014 The AIST Western Conference, a biennial meeting hosted by the AIST Northwest, San Francisco and Southern California Member Chapters, was held on Thursday, 27 March–Saturday, 29 March 2014 at the Westin Seattle in Seattle, Wash., USA. The event kicked off on Thursday, 27 March with a tour of the boutique wineries of Washington. Attendees gathered that evening for a vendor display and networking reception at the Westin Seattle. Golf Outing — September 2013 On Friday, 6 September 2013, the Southern California Member Chapter golf outing was held at the Jurupa Hills Country Club in Riverside, Calif. There were 120 participants in the outing, which helps to raise money for the chapter’s scholarship fund. Every year a charity is chosen to receive US$1,500 of the profits plus half of the 50/50 raffle ticket sales. This year, the chapter had the opportunity to donate a total of US$2,475 to Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This would not have been possible without the generous donations from vendors and suppliers. |
Vendor Fair — May 2013 On Thursday, 16 May, the Southern California Member Chapter hosted its annual vendor fair inside the California Steel Industries gymnasium in Fontana, Calif. The number of participating companies nearly doubled from previous years, for a total of 45 tabletop displays. Golf Outing — September 2012 The Southern California Member Chapter hosted a golf outing on Friday, 7 September 2012, at the Jurupa Hills Country Club in Riverside, Calif. There were 131 attendees at the outing. The chapter also donated $1,500 to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. In addition, the 50/50 raffle was donated to Relay for Life for an additional $1,012. During the event, chapter leadership for the 2012–2013 year was discussed, and the announcement was made that the chapter will again be offering its Member Chapter and Engineering scholarships for $1,500 each. |

Student Project Presentation Dinner Meeting — April 2012 The Southern California Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting with student presentations on Thursday, 19 April 2012 at the California Steel Industries cafeteria in Fontana, Calif. There were 60 people present at the meeting, which was a great turnout. Presentations included: “Aluminide Coatings on 304 Stainless Steel,” by Shaghik Abolian, Thomas Krenek, Stephanie Salas, Kevin Smith and Armen Kutyan; “Hot Corrosion of Nickel-Chromium Alloys,” by Nicholas Agee-Acosta, Brian Wozniak, Armando Coronado and Obed Villalpando; “Aqueous Corrosion of Advanced Titanium Alloys,” by Warintra Chantrjaroen, Carlos Beecher and Amina Razzak; and “Aluminum-Based Ceramic Composites,” by Antonio Jauregui, Harut Anjunyan, John Kessler and Mary Ann Pham. All of the presentations were made by students from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. |
Western Conference — March 2012 The AIST San Francisco, Northwest and Southern California Member Chapters joined together for the biannual AIST Western Conference. This year’s event was hosted by the San Francisco Member Chapter. The event was held on 1–2 March 2012 at the Marriott San Francisco Union Square in sunny San Francisco, California. There were 73 full conference attendees. The event opened on Thursday, 1 March with a golf outing at the Harding Park Golf Course, which hosted 52 golfers. There was also a plant tour at USS-POSCO Industries in Pittsburg, Calif., with 25 attendees. A welcome reception was held that evening and featured vendor exhibits from 17 participating companies. Friday’s program opened with a gathering in the vendor display area for breakfast. After breakfast, technical paper sessions were held and lasted through the afternoon. Eight technical papers were presented from USS-POSCO Industries, AirClean Technologies, Nucor Steel Seattle Inc. and California Steel Industries. That evening, a dinner was held and featured a keynote presentation by Christopher Thornberg, founding partner of Beacon Economics. Mr. Thornberg’s presentation was entitled, “Recovering From the Recovery.” Also at the dinner, the AIST Reliability Achievement Silver Award was presented to USS-POSCO Industries by Colleen Reeves, chair of AIST’s Maintenance & Reliability Technology Committee. John Cox accepted the award. AIST Executive Director Ron Ashburn was also in attendance and gave a brief overview of AISTech 2012 — The Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition. Dinner Meeting — January 2012 The Southern California Member Chapter hosted their annual business forecast at the California Steel Industries cafeteria on Thursday, 12 January 2012. The 2012 Steel Industry Forecast was presented by Vicente Wright, president and chief executive officer of California Steel Industries. The dinner was also “significant other” night. Attendees were encouraged to bring their significant others to the dinner and experience an AIST Member Chapter meeting. There were 75 attendees at the event. |
