Dinner Meeting  — April 2024
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a U. S. Steel Night on Tuesday, 9 April 2024, at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA. Approximately 75 professionals attended an informative presentation by chapter chair, Scott Bishop, U. S. Steel – Great Lakes Works, regarding innovation at U. S. Steel.

Dinner Meeting  — March 2024
On Tuesday, 12 March 2024, the chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA. Stuart Street, technical manager, Ironmaking, Cleveland-Cliffs Dearborn Works, presented “Dearborn Works – 2024 Primary Outage” to the 120 people in the audience.


Dinner Meeting  — February 2024
On Tuesday, 13 February 2024, the chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA. Approximately 120 people enjoyed a presentation by Kevin Kondrat, Gerdau Special Steel North America Monroe Mill, and Nicholas Walla, Purdue University Northwest’s Center for Innovation Through Visualization and Simulation. They provided a detailed explanation of a project to reduce CO2 and improve energy efficiency by utilizing hydrogen in a reheat furnace at the Monroe mill. The project will use a physics-based and data-driven approach and include digital simulations.

Dinner Meeting  — November 2023
The Detroit Member Chapter held a meeting at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA, on Tuesday, 7 November 2023. Approximately 90 people enjoyed the Edward C. Levy Night dinner and listened to a presentation from Tom Green, EHS director, Edw. C. Levy Co. He provided a summary of the National Slag Association focusing on steel mill slag, including its many beneficial uses as a product and its environmental safety.

Dinner Meeting  — October 2023
Nearly 90 people were in attendance at the Detroit Member Chapter meeting on Tuesday, 10 October 2023, at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA. Barry T. Schneider, president and chief operating officer, Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI), and 2022–2023 AIST president, gave a presentation regarding the purpose of AIST and its many benefits. He also provided an overview of SDI’s multiple divisions and their numerous innovations.

Golf Outing  — August 2023
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a golf outing on Monday, 7 August 2023. The group of 126 golfers endured some rain but enjoyed the day on the course at Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich., USA.

Jason Vorase, De-Cal Inc., added some excitement to the outing by hitting a hole-in-one on the putt challenge. Chapter secretary Roger Kalinowsky introduced Rebekah Smith and Aidan Ilg, two of the chapter’s four scholarship recipients who attended the dinner following the golf outing.

Cleveland-Cliffs Night  — April 2023
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted Cleveland-Cliffs Night on Tuesday, 25 April 2023, at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA. Taylor Murphy, general manager, Cleveland-Cliffs Dearborn Works, provided an interesting keynote presentation regarding the renovation and expansion of the plant’s basic oxygen furnace electrostatic precipitator. More than 100 members and guests were in the audience.

U.S. Steel Night — March 2023
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted U. S. Steel Night on Tuesday, 28 March 2023, at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA. Eugene Nikitenko, senior research consultant finishing processes, process innovation, United States Steel Corporation, provided a presentation titled “Benefits of Usage of Various Models in a Hot Strip Mill” to the 130 members and guests in the audience.

Gerdau Steel Night — February 2023
After an ice storm postponed the meeting by a day, 42 people attended the Detroit Member Chapter’s Gerdau Steel Night on Thursday, 22 February 2023, at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA. The audience enjoyed a keynote presentation from Lindsey Erb, ESG and communications manager, and Christopher Hessler, regional environmental manager, Gerdau Special Steel North America.

Dinner Meeting — January 2023
Keith J. Howell, chief operating officer, ArcelorMittal North America, gave his first presentation as 2022–2023 AIST president to a member chapter at the Detroit Member Chapter’s dinner meeting on Tuesday, 17 January 2023.
Howell’s keynote provided an overview of AIST, including key initiatives, as well as an informative synopsis of ArcelorMittal North America.
There were 97 members and guests in attendance at the Wyndham Garden Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA.

Dinner Meeting — November 2022
The Detroit Member Chapter held a meeting at the Wyndham Garden Southgate Hotel in Southgate, Mich., USA, on Tuesday, 1 November 2022. More than 65 people enjoyed the Linde Night dinner and listened to a presentation from Pravin Mathur, executive director — Metals, Combustion, Energy, Linde, regarding hydrogen steelmaking, which was followed by a question-and-answer session.

Dinner Meeting — September 2022
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter held an EES Coke Night dinner meeting on Tuesday, 13 September 2022, at the Wyndham Garden Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA. Keynote speaker Mike Lafferty, technology engineer, EES Coke Battery, presented “Ammonia Scrubber Rebuild,” to the 80 attendees.

Golf Outing — August 2022
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a successful golf outing on Monday, 2 August 2022. The group of 133 golfers played at picturesque Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon Mich., USA, on a pleasant summer day.
The team from the Barton Malow Co. won first place. In the group were Kelly Transit, Mark Burke, Chris Wicks and Mike Mueller.
At the dinner following the golf outing, chapter secretary Roger Kalinowsky introduced Robert Papalas and Rebekah Smith, two of the chapter’s four scholarship recipients who were present.

United States Steel Corporation Night — April 2022
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted United States Steel Corporation Night on Tuesday, 12 April 2022, at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA. Kevin J. Siebeneck, annealing coating development engineer, U. S. Steel – Great Lakes Works, provided a presented titled “CGL Zinc Wiping Equipment Upgrade” to the 130 members and guests in the audience.

Gerdau Steel Night — February 2022
More than 90 people attended the Detroit Member Chapter’s Gerdau Steel Night on Tuesday, 8 February 2022, at the Wyndham Garden Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA. The audience enjoyed an interesting presentation titled “Development and Production of 52100 Bearing Steel at Gerdau Monroe” by Nick Johnson, R&D technical specialist, Gerdau Special Steel North America, and Mike Zuker, metallurgist, Gerdau Special Steel North America.
On Tuesday, 8 March, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted Cleveland-Cliffs Night at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, Mich., USA. Matthew Rea, general manager HBR, Cleveland-Cliffs IronUnits LLC, gave a keynote speech on Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.’s new hot briquetted iron plant in Toledo, Ohio, USA, to the 162 attendees.

Dinner Meeting — January 2022
Steven J. Henderson, vice president western region, CMC Steel Arizona, gave his first address to a Member Chapter as 2021–2022 AIST president at the Detroit Member Chapter’s dinner meeting on Tuesday, 18 January 2022. The dinner was a welcome return as it was the Detroit Member Chapter’s first meeting in 22 months. 
Henderson provided an overview of AIST and its key initiatives, and information on Commercial Metals Company and their micro-mill production process. There were 52 members and guests in attendance at the Wyndham Garden Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA. 

Golf Outing — August 2021
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted its golf outing on Monday, 2 August 2021. The group of 156 golfers enjoyed a great day on the course at Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich., USA. 

Dinner Meeting — March 2020
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a successful AK Steel Night dinner meeting on Tuesday, 10 March 2020, at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA. Ronald H. Radzilowski, principal research engineer, AK Steel Corp., was the keynote speaker.
The group of 140 professionals enjoyed Radzilowski’s presentation, titled “Emerging Technologies and Process Innovations in the Steel Industry.”

Dinner Meeting — January 2020
“Gerdau: Shape the Future — How We Are Living Our Purpose” was presented by Giuliano Costantino, Gerdau GMaker and product line manager, Gerdau Special Steel North America, at the AIST Detroit Member Chapter dinner meeting on Tuesday, 11 February. Gerdau Special Steel North America shared how it is getting prepared for a VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) world and for the ever-changing automotive industry. The presentation included highlights about the company’s GMakers leadership training, its digital road map and initiatives Gerdau is taking to help customers develop products of the future. There were 110 members and guests in attendance at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA.

Dinner Meeting — January 2020
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting on Tuesday, 21 January 2020, at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA. More than 70 professionals listened intently as Daniel Matzeg, project engineer, Firebridge Inc., presented “Burner Technologies for Heating Steelmaking Ladles.”

AIST President's Night — November 2019
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted AIST President’s Night on Tuesday, 12 November 2019, at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA. Ronald J. O’Malley, 
F. Kenneth Iverson Professor in Steelmaking Technologies and director, Kent D. Peaslee Steelmaking Manufacturing Research Center, Missouri University of Science and Technology and 2019–2020 AIST president, gave the keynote presentation titled “Collaborative Research and Development in Steel Manufacturing at the Peaslee Steel Manufacturing Research Center.” There were 99 attendees in the audience.

Dinner Meeting — October 2019
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a DTE Night dinner meeting on Tuesday, 8 October 2019, at the Holiday Inn, Southgate, Mich., USA, with a keynote presentation from Kevin Dahm, project manager, DTE Energy. Approximately 100 people attended the dinner and were very impressed with Dahm’s entertaining presentation regarding DTE’s Blue Water Energy Center being constructed in East China Township, Mich., USA. Following the presentation, there was great audience participation with considerable questions and discussion.

Dinner Cruise — August 2019

The Sidock Group was out in force for the Detroit Member Chapter’s dinner cruise on 17 August 2019 as they sailed by the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit, Mich., USA (left to right): Jill McNaught; Jesse Kolb; Roger Kalinowsky, Chapter secretary; Jessica Kolb, Chapter treasurer; Bill Sidock; and Kim Stampe

On Saturday, 17 August 2019, 80 AIST members and guests set sail from Portofino in Wyandotte, Mich., USA, and enjoyed a beautiful Detroit River Cruise. The views from the boat on the warm summer evening were spectacular.
On Tuesday, 10 September 2019, at the Holiday Inn Southgate, Southgate, Mich., USA, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted its first dinner meeting of the year. More than 75 professionals listened intently to Pravin Mathur, global market director – metals, combustion, energy and Megha Jampani, development specialist from Praxair explain the benefits of maximizing use of natural gas in blast furnace injection.

Golf Outing — August 2019
The 2019 AIST Detroit Member Chapter golf outing was an amazing success! On Monday, 5 August, 206 golfers played the beautiful and challenging Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon Mich., USA, on a warm and sunny day.
At the dinner following the outing, Roger Kalinowsky, Chapter secretary, introduced five of the six 2019 Judith A. Quinn Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship winners: Aaron Hipshier, Michigan State University; Brandon Tower and Ethan Wing, Grand Valley State University; Erica Brower and Andrew Rellinger, University of Michigan; and Leif Olson, Michigan Technological University (not present).

Dinner Meeting — April 2019
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a U. S. Steel Night dinner meeting on Tuesday, 9 April 2019, at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA. The meeting featured a keynote presentation from United States Steel Corporation senior process engineer Chris Rabold. More than 260 professionals enjoyed Rabold’s presentation on U. S. Steel – Great Lakes Works’ D-4 Blast Furnace reline project.

Dinner Meeting — March 2019
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted an AK Steel Night dinner meeting on Tuesday, 12 March 2019, at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA. The audience of more than 180 professionals enjoyed Mike Kercsmar’s presentation, which was titled “Preventing Serious Injuries and Fatalities.”  Kercsmar is vice president, Specialty Steel for AK Steel and is a member of the AIST Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

Dinner Meeting — February 2019 
“The Evolution and Future of Clean Steels” was the presentation by Denise Corrêa de Oliveira, research and development engineer, Gerdau Special Steel North America, at the AIST Detroit Member Chapter dinner meeting on Tuesday, 12 February. Her presentation focused on Gerdau Special Steel North America’s success in improving steel cleanliness and reducing inclusions in their special bar quality product. There were 150 in attendance at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA.

Dinner Meeting — November 2018
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting on Tuesday, 13 November 2018, at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA, which featured a keynote presentation from James F. Dudek, vice president — Asset Revitalization and Manufacturing Excellence, United States Steel Corporation and 2018–2019 AIST president. Dudek’s presentation, “The State of the Industry & U. S. Steel’s Asset Revitalization Program,” was well received by the 165 professionals in attendance.

Dinner Meeting — October 2018
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted its first meeting of the 2018–2019 year on Tuesday, 9 October 2018, with a keynote presentation from Chris Zona, senior vice president, DTE Midstream. There were approximately 130 in attendance. Zona gave an interesting presentation on DTE’s Midstream segment of the business. He provided insight on how shale natural gas production, new high-pressure interstate pipelines and underground storage will help lower natural gas costs.

Golf Outing — August 2018
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a successful golf outing on Monday, 6 August 2018, at the Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich., USA. More than 200 golfers enjoyed an afternoon on the course followed by a banquet. Following dinner, the Chapter honored the three 2018 Judith A. Quinn Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship winners: Aaron Hipshier, Michigan State University; Jordan Tower, Oakland University; and Erica Brower, University of Michigan.

Tigers Game — June 2018
Nearly 50 members and friends of the AIST Detroit Member Chapter enjoyed a day at Comerica Park and the Detroit Athletic Club in Detroit, Mich., USA, before the Detroit Tigers game on Saturday, 9 June 2018. Even though there was a rain delay, a couple extra hours of socializing before the game didn’t dim anyone’s spirits.

U. S. Steel – Great Lakes Works Night — April 2018
Approximately 250 people attended the AIST Detroit Member Chapter’s U. S. Steel – Great Lakes Works Night at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA, on Tuesday, 10 April 2018. The evening’s keynote presentation was delivered by Ernie Serrano, consulting engineer, process engineering, United States Steel Corporation. Serrano’s presentation discussed the Great Lakes Works’ revamp of its No. 5 Continuous Pickle Line with iBox pickling technology.

Dinner Meeting — March 2018
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting on Tuesday, 13 March 2018, at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA. The meeting featured a keynote presentation from Brian Bishop, vice president, Carbon Steel Operations, AK Steel, and a member of the AIST Board of Directors. More than 180 attendees enjoyed Bishop’s presentation, in which he provided a synopsis of AK Steel regarding the state of the company and the outlook for the Dearborn facility. Bishop’s discussion also touched on trade cases and tariffs, as well as AISTech 2018.

Dinner Meeting — February 2018
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting on Tuesday, 13 February 2018, at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA, which featured a keynote presentation from Darrel Moore, vice president/general manager, Michigan and Indiana Operations, Gerdau Special Steel North America. More than 150 attendees enjoyed Moore’s presentation, “An Overview of Gerdau Special Steel North America and the Recent Expansion at Our Monroe Facility.”

Dinner Meeting — November 2017
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting on Tuesday, 7 November 2017, at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA that featured a keynote presentation from Randy Skagen, vice president and general manager, Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa Inc., and 2017–2018 AIST president. Skagen’s presentation, “Nucor: Making Steel Great Again,” was well received by the 80 professionals in attendance.

Keynote Presentation — 2017
The AIST Detroit Chapter hosted their first meeting of the 2017–2018 year with a keynote presentation from Robert Feldmann, executive director electric sales and marketing, DTE Electric Co. He focused on DTE’s Certificate of Necessity, which pertained to DTE Electric’s proposed changes to its electricity generation mix from primarily coal to natural gas and renewable energy. At the conclusion of his presentation, Feldmann fielded several interesting questions and provided additional information to the audience of approximately 110 professionals.

Golf Outing — August 2017
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted its annual golf outing on Monday, 7 August 2017, at the Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich., USA. Dinner Meeting — April 2017
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a U. S. Steel Night dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA, on Tuesday, 11 April 2017. Keynote speaker Mike Davenport, director engineer — applications for United States Steel Corporation, spoke on developments and guidelines for producing automotive advanced high-strength steel. There were more than 170 attendees in the audience.

Dinner Meeting — March 2017
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA, on Tuesday, 14 March 2017. Keynote speaker Eric S. Petersen, vice president, Research and Innovation, AK Steel, presented “Innovative Steel Grades and Their Potential for Lightweighting in Automotive Structures.” The presentation covered the next generations of advanced high-strength steels and their applications in automotive vehicles, as well as AK Steel’s newly constructed research facility and AK’s commitment to industry innovation. It was followed by an engaging question-and-answer session that generated a good response from the 200-plus attendees.

Dinner Meeting — February 2017
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn Southgate in Southgate, Mich., USA, on Wednesday, 15 February 2017. Wendell Carter, vice president and general manager of ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor and 2016–2017 AIST president, was the evening’s keynote presenter. There were 135 members in attendance.

Dinner Meeting — October 2016
On Monday, 7 November 2016, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted its Sidock Group Night dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. The keynote speaker Mike Eagen, senior project consultant for the Sidock Group, presented “Erection of the Roof at Ford Field.” Eagen gave an excellent and interesting presentation to almost 100 people, in which he explained the Ford Field roof erection procedure with spans up to 528 feet long and truss weights up to 1,600 tons.

Dinner Meeting — October 2016
On Tuesday, 11 October 2016, the AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted its Midland Tool & Supply Night dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA, featuring a keynote presentation by Brian Boychuk, president of Midland Tool & Supply.
Boychuk’s presentation focused on how Midland Tool & Supply can assist construction forces to meet their need for tools and safety equipment during complex 24-hour a day projects. At the conclusion of his presentation, Boychuk fielded several interesting questions and provided additional information to the group of approximately 90 professionals in attendance.

Golf Outing — August 2016
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted its annual golf outing on Monday, 1 August 2016 at the Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich., USA. Proceeds from the event will benefit the AIST Detroit Member Chapter’s Judith A. Quinn Scholarship Fund. There were 180 participants at this year’s event and everyone enjoyed a beautiful day of networking, golf and dinner. SMS group (Dearborn) and Imerys tied for lowest score at 58.

Annual Day at the Ballpark — June 2016
A great time was had by all who attended the AIST Detroit Member Chapter’s annual day at the ballpark on Saturday, 25 June 2016, where 90 members and guests participated. The afternoon began with food and drinks at the prestigious Detroit Athletic Club, followed by an afternoon baseball game at Comerica Park in Detroit, Mich., USA. Even though the Detroit Tigers lost to the Cleveland Indians 6-0, the group enjoyed watching the Tigers play from great seats in the upper deck behind home plate.

The Detroit Member Chapter’s annual day at the ballpark drew 90 attendees on 25 June 2016.

On Tuesday, 8 March 2016, the AIST Detroit Member Chapter held an enjoyable dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn Southgate, Southgate, Mich., USA, with 100 attendees. The keynote speaker was Doug Klingensmith, vice president of technical support and business development, Unconventional Solutions Inc., who presented “Minimizing and Preventing Unscheduled Down Days With Composite Systems.”

Dinner Meeting — February 2016
On Tuesday, 9 February 2016, the AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted its Alta Equipment Night dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. The keynote presentation was delivered by Bill Staggs, rental territory manager, and Mike Bills, vice president sales and rental operations of Alta Equipment. They presented “The Alta Story and its Impact on the Steel Industry” to the 225 steel industry professionals in attendance, including many members of the AIST Oxygen Steelmaking Technology Committee.

Dinner Meeting — November 2015
On Tuesday, 10 November 2015, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. There were 105 steel industry professionals in attendance. The keynote presentation was delivered by current AIST president George Koenig, director — global business and technology development, Iron & Steel, Hatch Associates Inc. Detroit Member Chapter chair Rich Kritikos, engineering manager, U. S. Steel – Great Lakes Works, awarded Jordan Tower, a mechanical engineering student at Wayne State University, with an AIST Judith A. Quinn Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship. Tower’s scholarship was one of four bestowed by the chapter in 2015.

Dinner Meeting — October 2015
On Tuesday, 13 October 2015, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted its DTE Energy Night dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. There were 130 steel industry professionals in attendance. The keynote presentation was delivered by Dave Andrea, senior vice president and chief economist for the Original Equipment Suppliers Association. His presentation was titled “The Top 10 Questions Facing Auto Suppliers,” which proved to be an interesting and well-received topic. 

Golf Outing  August 2015
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a golf outing on Monday, 3 August 2015, at the Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich., USA. There were 208 attendees. A team from SMS Technical Services won the scramble contest with a score of 61. Proceeds from the event benefit the AIST Detroit Member Chapter’s Judith A. Quinn Scholarship Fund. Dinner was held after the golf outing, during which two of the chapter’s scholarship recipients were recognized.

Baseball Game — June 2015
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a networking event on Saturday, 13 June 2015, in which nearly 100 members and guests participated. The afternoon began with food and drinks at the prestigious Detroit Athletic Club, followed by an exciting late-afternoon baseball game at Comerica Park in Detroit, Mich., USA.

On Tuesday, 14 April 2015, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted a U. S. Steel – Great Lakes Works Night dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. Q. Edward Liu, senior research engineer, process technology — steelmaking and casting from the U. S. Steel Research and Technology Center, served as the keynote speaker. Liu’s presentation was titled “Effective Inclusion Treatment With Solid Core Pure Calcium Wire.” There were 193 attendees at the dinner.

On Tuesday, 10 March 2015, the Detroit Member Chapter held a dinner meeting sponsored by AK Steel Corp. The dinner was held at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. The keynote speaker for the dinner was Stuart Street, technology manager, Ironmaking department at AK Steel Corp. – Dearborn Works. His presentation was entitled “Titanium and Iron: Fishing Lures, Golf Clubs, Superheroes or an Ironmaking Curse-to-Cure Story.” There were 250 attendees at the dinner.

On Tuesday, 11 November 2014, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. The event featured a keynote presentation by Glenn Pushis, vice president — sheet products, Steel Dynamics Inc. – Flat Rolled Div., 2014–2015 AIST president. His presentation was titled “Culture Is Strategy.” There were 112 attendees at the meeting.

The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting on Tuesday, 14 October 2014 at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. The event was sponsored by DTE Energy and featured a keynote presentation by Melissa Seymour, regional executive — central region for MISO Energy. Seymour’s presentation included an overview of MISO Energy. There were 185 attendees at the dinner.

The Detroit Member Chapter’s annual golf outing was held on Monday, 4 August 2014 at the Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich., USA. The outing was held in scramble format and proceeds will benefit the AIST Detroit Member Chapter’s Judith A. Quinn Scholarship Fund. This year’s event had 215 participants.

Dinner Meeting — April 2014
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a United States Steel Corporation Night dinner meeting on Tuesday, 8 April 2014 at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. Tony Nuzzo, director — engineering for U. S. Steel, served as keynote speaker for the dinner. His presentation was titled “U. S. Steel Lorain Plant No. 4 Seamless Mill Expansion.” There were 160 attendees at the meeting.

The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting on Tuesday, 11 March at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. The keynote presentation was given by Mark R. Blankenau, manager of process technology at Severstal Dearborn, and was titled “Flat Rolled Steel and the Competition for the Automotive Materials Market.” There were 230 attendees at the event.

Memorial Dinner  February 2014
The AIST Detroit Member Chapter hosted a memorial dinner in honor of Judith A. Quinn on Tuesday, 11 February 2014 at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., USA. Quinn was a Life Member of AIST and served as the Detroit Member Chapter secretary until her passing in late October 2013. At the dinner, the chapter shared a slideshow of photos, and several of Quinn’s friends and colleagues spoke on her behalf. There were more than 180 attendees at the dinner. Donations received and all profits from the dinner will benefit the Detroit Member Chapter’s Judith A. Quinn Scholarship fund.

Dinner Meeting — October 2013
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted an AIST National Night on Tuesday, 8 October 2013 at the Holiday Inn at Southgate, Mich. Terry G. Fedor II, vice president, U.S. Iron Ore Operations for Cliffs Natural Resources and the 2013–2014 AIST president, was the keynote presenter. Jim Hanner, past chair of the Detroit Member Chapter, Rudolph/Libbe Inc., was recognized as the winner of the 2013 Detroit Member Chapter Outstanding Service Award. The event had 135 attendees.

Dinner Meeting — September 2013
The Detroit Member Chapter kicked off its fall programming with a dinner on Tuesday, 10 September 2013 at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich. The evening was sponsored by DTE Energy and featured a keynote presentation by Gregory P. Garland, manager of energy optimization at DTE Energy. Garland’s presentation was entitled, “The 2014 Energy Efficiency Program.” There were 125 attendees at the meeting.

Golf Outing — August 2013
On Monday, 5 August 2013, the Detroit Member Chapter’s annual golf outing was held at the Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich. There were 216 golfers in this year’s tournament, and they enjoyed a day of wonderful weather and networking.

Dinner Meeting — April 2013
On Tuesday, 9 April 2013, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich. The dinner meeting included a keynote presentation by James R. Gray, general manager, U. S. Steel – Great Lakes Works. Also at the dinner, it was announced that the Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship would be named in honor of its current secretary, Judie Quinn. The naming of the Judith A. Quinn Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship was not the only surprise for Ms. Quinn, as her family joined the dinner to celebrate the occasion as well. There were 300 attendees at the meeting.

On Tuesday, 12 March 2013, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich. The dinner featured a keynote presentation by David Brandau of Severstal Dearborn. The title of Brandau’s presentation was, “The Start-Up of the Severstal Dearborn 72-Inch Hot-Dip Galvanizing Line.”

The Detroit Member Chapter hosted its annual Vegas Night scholarship benefit on Friday, 15 February 2013 at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich. There were 120 attendees at the event.

On Tuesday, 13 November 2012, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich. “Steam Coffin: Captain Moses Rogers and the Steamship Savannah Break the Barrier” was presented by historian, John L. Busch. There were 110 attendees at the dinner.

On Tuesday, 9 October, the Detroit Member Chapter held a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich. The evening was sponsored by DTE Energy and featured a keynote presentation by Rob Bacyinski, program manager — alternative fuel vehicles for DTE Energy. His presentation was entitled, “Natural Gas — The Alternative Fuel for Transportation.” There were 120 attendees at the dinner.

On Tuesday, 11 September, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted a social night/dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., where attendees were able to reconnect with business contacts and receive an update on the Detroit Member Chapter. There were 120 attendees at the dinner.

Golf Outing — August 2012
On Monday, 6 August 2012, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted its annual golf outing at the Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich. A sold-out crowd of 258 golfers participated this year. The event was a great success. Proceeds from the event will go to the AIST Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship fund.

Dinner Meeting — April 2012
The Detroit Member Chapter hosted a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich., on Tuesday, 17 April. It was the chapter’s annual United States Steel Corporation night. The keynote presentation was given by Bart DePompolo, technical marketing manager, U. S. Steel – Automotive Center. His presentation was entitled, “Keeping Steel the Material Choice for the Automotive Market.” Also at the dinner, Wendell Amica of U. S. Steel was presented with a plaque recognizing his term as the 2011–2012 chapter chair. There were 230 attendees at the dinner.

Dinner Meeting — March 2012
On Tuesday, 13 March, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted the Severstal Dearborn Night dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich. The keynote presenters were Larry Flowers, division manager — finishing operations, and John Tomasaitis, lead project engineer — cold mill modernization, both from Severstal Dearborn. Their presentation was entitled, “Severstal Dearborn PLTCM: Overview of Construction, Commissioning and Operations of a New Facility.” There were 260 attendees at the dinner.

Vegas Night Scholarship Fundraiser — February 2012
On Friday, 24 February 2012, the Detroit Member Chapter hosted a “Vegas Night” themed scholarship benefit at the Holiday Inn in Southgate, Mich. More than 170 attendees participated in this second annual event. The benefit was held to raise money to help support the Detroit Member Chapter’s scholarship fund.
