Project & Construction Management Technology Committee Activities

PCMTC members toured Kiewit’s Offshore Services where they saw an oil rig being built that will be sent to Newfoundland, Canada.  

The PCMTC met 31 January 2024, Corpus Christi, Texas, USA.
The group discussed the steel industry fatalities for the year, formalized the two panel discussions for AISTech 2024, and discussed the creation of a Project Management 201 Technology Training Course.
The group’s first plant tour was of Kiewit’s Offshore Services, where they saw the building of an oil rig that will eventually go to Newfoundland. The second day, the group toured Steel Dynamics Inc. – Flat Roll Group Southwest-Sinton Division and received an in-depth presentation on the construction projects there.

The PCMTC met 6 October 2023, Columbus, Ohio, USA.
Jagannathan Rajagopalan, PCMTC chair, opened and led the meeting, which had 25 attendees. The group discussed the 2023 Steel Industry Fatalities Report, created two panel discussions for AISTech, confirmed the winner for the Project Excellence Award and discussed the value of the newly created Project Management: 101 specialty conference. Two new teams were assembled for the 2024 Project Management: 101 conference with the creation of a 201-level course.

The PCMTC met 7 February 2023, Birmingham, Ala., USA.
 The group discussed the 2022 Steel Industry Fatalities report, finalized their panel discussion for AISTech, confirmed judges for the Project Excellence Award and held officer nominations for the 2023–2024 term. The PCMTC finalized the outline for a Project Management 101 course, which will be held 4–5 October 2023 in Columbus, Ohio, USA. The group then went to U. S. Steel – Fairfield Works, where a presentation was given by Denson Roy, followed by an in-depth tour of the mill’s electric arc furnace.

The group discussed the Steel Industry Fatalities report, created their panel discussion for AISTech, assigned committee members to solicit companies for the Project Excellence Award and further discussed an outline for a Project Management 101 course.
The PCMTC then visited North Star BlueScope Steel, where a presentation was given by Ryan Modglin, senior plant engineer, followed by an in-depth tour.

The PCMTC met 19 January 2022, Orlando, Fla., USA.
Neil Tannyan, PCMTC vice chair, opened and led the meeting for the 11 members in attendance. The group discussed the latest Steel Industry Fatalities report, created their panel discussion for AISTech 2022 and prepared the slate of officer nominations for the 2022–2023 term. The official officer elections will take place at the committee’s meeting at AISTech 2022 in May.
Next, there was a presentation given by Terry Boyd, Nucor Steel Florida Inc., where he showed two videos of the building of the new Nucor Steel Florida mill and answered numerous questions from the group.
The group toured Nucor Steel Florida Inc. that afternoon. Nucor gave a very informative tour and showed videos from the start of the building process, including clearing the land from inside the orange groves.

The PCMTC met 27 September 2021, virtual.
Rich Dugan, PCMTC chair, opened and led the meeting. The group discussed the Steel Industry Fatalities report for the year, made their paper selection for AISTech and adjusted the criteria for the Project Excellence award. They created a project list of current projects across the country.

The group toured the Cleveland-Cliffs IronUnits LLC facility the next morning. Cleveland-Cliffs gave an excellent, in-depth walking tour.

The PCMTC held a virtual meeting 25 March 2021.
The group discussed the Steel Industry Fatalities Report for 2021 and had a roundtable discussion about safety and travel within attendees’ companies at this time.
The PCMTC’s AISTech 2021 sessions were reviewed and the panel discussion title and topics were confirmed.
The committee officers have decided to stay on for 2021–2022 term.
The committee discussed a Technology Training Conference, and the Project Excellence Award and the need for more nominations.

The PCMTC held a virtual meeting 13 October 2020.
The PCMTC discussed their AISTech 2021 session planning along with digital transformation strategies.
The group is planning a Managing Technology conference for September 2021. 
Al Varga gave an update on a proposed project with evaluations based on safety and travel restrictions at Nucor Steel–Arkansas. 
Ryan Throckmorton was appointed to the position of Young Professional chair after a vacancy was created. 
A roundtable discussion followed, during which attendees discussed how they are handling the COVID-19 pandemic, how their projects are keeping to their timelines and the current status of these projects.  

The PCMTC held a virtual meeting 29 April 2020.
The PCMTC began their meeting with a review of their mission statement and the AISTech 2021 Call for Papers. The group also discussed the committee’s objectives for the upcoming year. A roundtable discussion followed in which attendees discussed how they are handling the COVID-19 pandemic, how their projects are keeping to their timelines and the current status of these projects.

The PCMTC met 18 February 2020, Marina Del Ray, Calif., USA.
The PCMTC met for a very informative meeting. The meeting began with a review and discussion of the AIST Steel Industry Fatalities Report. The committee then finalized their slate of officers for the 2020–2021 term and added a Young Professional chair. The final vote will take place at AISTech 2020.
Discussion was held on how to solicit more projects for the Project Excellence Award. New site locations were also discussed for the next Managing Technology training conference.
The committee also held a roundtable discussion on upcoming construction projects and newest trends in the industry. Kiewit Corp. had representatives in attendance to give a presentation titled “Evolution of Rams Stadium Project,” which went through the entire process on the construction of SoFi Stadium, the future home of the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers. This was a big undertaking due to many constraints in the Inglewood/Los Angeles Area. The group was then driven over to SoFi Stadium for a hard-hat tour.

The PCMTC began its meeting with a review of its AISTech 2020 session. Volunteers were taken for session chairs.
The committee previewed the Managing Technology conference, which took place immediately following the meeting at ArcelorMittal Dofasco. Plant locations for future Managing Technology conferences were discussed.
Finally, the PCMTC had an open discussion on future meetings, steel industry fatalities and safety, and current events within the industry.

The PCMTC met 10 October 2018, East Chicago, Ind., USA.
The meeting kicked off with a tour of ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor. A significant amount of time was spent at the caster, since it won the 2018 AIST Project Excellence Award.
The PCMTC then conducted its business meeting, which began with a review of the 2018 Steel Industry Fatalities report, followed by a discussion.
The committee discussed abstracts for AISTech 2019 and capital projects going on in North America for a possible Managing Technology Conference. A new training  conference was also discussed, which would be titled Project Management 101.

The PCMTC toured Big River Steel on 14 September 2017.

The PCMTC met 14 September 2017, Memphis, Tenn., USA. This meeting was co-located with and held following the Managing Technology — Big River Steel training course. Fifteen PCMTC members were in attendance.
The PCMTC reviewed its AISTech 2018 technical session development. Ten abstracts had been selected and reviewed by the group, and session chairs were solicited. Each year, the PCMTC develops a “special subject” session and ideas for future topics were solicited.
The AISTech 2019 Call for Papers topics were reviewed, and three new topics were suggested: constructability review, contract management and site materials management.
The group discussed the Project Excellence Award selection and candidate solicitation. The PCTMC also discussed the Managing Technology course held earlier that week, as well as planning for future conferences.
Hans Steif gave a presentation covering the new Young Professional recruitment initiative within the PCMTC.

The PCMTC met 8 May 2017, Nashville, Tenn., USA.

The PCMTC met 18–19 January 2017, Pascagoula, Miss., USA. The PCMTC discussed its attendance at meetings and how to engage more members from mini-mills, from the south and Young Professional members. It was proposed to issue a survey to the PCMTC membership to gain insight on what drives meeting attendance and provide useful content for future meetings.
The committee reviewed the technical program development for AISTech 2017. The PCMTC has arranged three sessions total, one of which will be a panel discussion. Session titles and chairs were finalized.
Committee officers for 2017–2018 were discussed and elections will take place during the PCMTC meeting at AISTech 2017.
There was discussion regarding the development and marketing of a new Managing Technology Specialty Training Conference. It will be held 12–14 September 2017 in Memphis, Tenn., USA, and will feature the construction and commissioning of the new Big River Steel plant.
The 2017 Project Excellence Award winner was announced. The committee is currently reviewing and revising the scoring criteria for this award process in an attempt to simplify it and encourage more submissions.

The PCMTC and SHTC met 21–22 September 2016, Burlington, Ont., Canada. The group reviewed the 2016 Steel Industry Fatalities report, followed by a safety roundtable discussion.
Each committee reviewed its technical session development for AISTech 2017. The PCMTC and SHTC each have three sessions planned. The roles of session chairs and papers chair were reviewed.
An update was given on the Project Excellence Award, as well as the Managing Technology training conference, which will be held on 12–14 September 2017 at Big River Steel in Osceola, Ark., USA.
The Safety and Health Conference was also discussed. Those interested in participating should contact Brad Bray, SHTC education chair.

The PCMTC met 16 May 2016, Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

The PCMTC met 20–21 January 2016, San Antonio, Texas, USA. The group is working on a poster to promote PCMTC membership by highlighting its activities and the benefits of membership. Once complete, this poster may be displayed at various Member Chapter meetings and other AIST events. 
The PCMTC reviewed its technical sessions for AISTech 2016 and addressed some remaining issues. 
There was an extensive discussion on revamping the Project Excellence Award scoring criteria and deadlines.
Chairpersons for the upcoming term were nominated and will be approved at AISTech 2016.
There was a general discussion on potential ways to improve committee activities in the future.
In the afternoon, the PCMTC met with the Safety & Health Technology Committee (SHTC) for presentations on owner-controlled insurance programs (OCIP) by Scott Belamy and Ed Davis of Wells Fargo Insurance Services.
