Electric Steelmaking Committee Activities

The ESTC met 7 February 2024, Louisville, Ky., USA.
The ESTC had its meeting co-located with Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar. The group met to discuss committee business, which included an extensive safety discussion on recent injuries and fatalities, particularly those related to contractor safety and new equipment installations. They also discussed the plans for upcoming EAF Study Tour to Japan in late fall 2024. The group invited Dan Bourlotos and Greg Brasel of Carbide Industries to give an overview of calcium carbide production as well as its use in the EAF.
After the meeting, the ESTC members participated in a tour of Levy Brandenburg Mill Services, touring both the slag processing and scrap handling operations. Following the tour, the group participated in a roundtable discussion and reception with the attendees of the training course.

The ESTC met 28 September 2023, Orlando, Fla., USA
The ESTC met in Orlando, Fla., before the AIST Globe-Trotters Member Chapter annual meeting. The meeting spotlighted key presentations on meltshop safety improvements over the years and novel uses of fiber optics, alongside a discussion on electric arc furnace key performance indicators.
The committee was able to plan for their upcoming events including Modern Electric Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar, which will be held 5–9 February 2024 in Louisville, Ky., USA. The ESTC also gauged interest from the group on holding a study tour in Japan in March 2024.

The ESTC met 22 February 2023, San Antonio Texas, USA.
The ESTC had its meeting co-located with Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training seminar. The group met to discuss committee business, including measures around the industry to engineer tasks to remove hazards to those that work on the meltshop floor. The group invited Charles Ochola, president of the National Slag Association, and Kelly Cook, the technical marketing director at Levy, to discuss the current regulatory environment and the challenges faced with the traditional uses of slags. 
After the meeting, the ESTC participated in a roundtable discussion and reception with the attendees of the training conference.

Brandon Kaminski, CMC Steel Arizona, presented “Overview of Scrap Market in Western USA,” at the ESTC’s meeting in Texas.

The ESTC met 27 August 2022, Corpus Christi, Texas, USA
The ESTC had an excellent meeting which included an extended discussion on raw materials supply. There was an extensive safety discussion focused on scrap handling and scrap inspection both at the mill level and upstream at the scrap suppliers. The discussion moved from scrap sorting machines to how mills have educated scrap suppliers on the dangers associated with poor scrap. The meeting had 25 participants.
The ESTC also gave updates on other various committee activities. The AISTech 2023 technical program for the ESTC currently has 32 abstracts. The group also discussed the next Modern Electric Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar, which will take place in San Antonio, Texas, USA, on 20–24 February 2023 with a tour of CMC Steel Texas.

The ESTC met 9 February 2022, Orlando, Fla., USA

The Electric Steelmaking Technology Committee met in Orlando, Fla., USA, on 9 February 2022.

The ESTC meeting was held in conjunction with Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar (see page 200 for a conference recap). Committee chair Gilbert Hutton welcomed members to the meeting. The first half of the meeting focused on committee business, including AISTech session building, award planning and nominations for officers for next year. ESTC membership chair Alex England noted that next year’s training course will be in San Antonio, Texas, USA, with a tour of CMC Steel Texas. He also discussed the upcoming Young Professional events and webinars. Sam Matson gave an update on the efforts of the AIST Foundation to choose quality scholarship candidates. Stephan Ferenczy gave an update from the AIST Board of Directors and Awards and Recognition Program Committee. 
The rest of the meeting was an in-depth safety discussion on maintaining focus with new construction, seasonal and new workforce and high production times, and during upset conditions or unplanned outages. Following a tour of Nucor Steel Florida Inc., the ESTC then participated in a panel discussion as part of the Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking training conference.

The ESTC had a very productive meeting, which included a lengthy safety discussion focused around furnace washouts — this included a roundtable discussion as well as an exercise where the 24 committee members present brainstormed a list of 36 reasons why there could be a loss of containment.
The committee also gave updates on numerous other tasks. The AISTech 2022 technical program for the ESTC currently has 20 abstracts. There was also discussion on holding an “ESTC — Greatest Hits” session where the past few years’ best papers are re-presented, along with an EAF roundtable discussion.
The group also discussed the next Modern Electric Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar, which will take place in Orlando, Fla., USA, on 7–11 February 2022 with a tour of Nucor Steel Florida. There are plans to rework some of the content of the program and include additional presentations on decarbonization and process control and automation.

The ESTC held a virtual meeting 3 February 2021.
Gilbert Hutton, ESTC chair, opened the committee’s winter meeting and welcomed the attendees.
Following a review of committee membership and AIST staff announcements, the members reviewed the status of the ESTC sessions currently scheduled for AISTech 2021. The ESTC has 34 papers scheduled.
Alyssa Van Delden, ESTC papers chair, encouraged the session chairs to begin reaching out to the authors regarding upcoming deadlines.
Members then discussed nominations for 2021–2022 committee officers as well as its 2021 awards, including the Charles W. Briggs Award and the John Bell Award.
The group then reviewed upcoming ESTC-sponsored webinars and the 2021 Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking Training Seminar.
The ESTC also heard reports from AIST Digital Transformation Subcommittee activities and the Young Professional Recruitment Subcommittee.
The meeting then broke into a roundtable discussion on a variety of issues such as carbon footprint reduction, metal oxidation issues prior to slag foaming, and the use of predictive analysis for refractory life.

The ESTC held a virtual meeting 20 October 2020
The ESTC’s fall meeting kicked off with a safety discussion inspired by the latest Steel Industry Fatalities report.
The ESTC then reviewed their 2021 committee award planning, including the Charles W. Briggs Award and the John Bell Award. Nominations for AIST Board of Directors Awards, including the Tadeusz Sendzimir Memorial Medal, were also solicited.
The committee then moved on to updates to the 2021 AIST Electric Arc Furnace Roundup. A number of new facilities and furnaces have come on-line since the 2020 edition was published, and committee members should contact ESTC roundup chair Rob Strain to assist with gathering this information.

The ESTC had a virtual meeting 4 May 2020
The ESTC meeting began with a review of the committee’s objectives for the coming year. It was decided that the committee’s meeting at AISTech 2020 will serve as the ESTC’s fall meeting. The group then reviewed the status of Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar, which will be held in Nashville, Tenn., USA, in February 2021.
Committee officer elections for the 2020–2021 term were held. The 2020–2021 ESTC officers are:

The ESTC met 6 February 2019, Charleston, S.C., USA. The ESTC reviewed the 2018 Steel Industry Fatalities, followed by a safety roundtable discussion.
Stephan Ferenczy discussed AISTech 2019 technical session planning. Five ESTC sessions are scheduled. The roles of session chairs and papers chair were reviewed.
Nominations for ESTC officers for the 2019–2020 term were taken.
The committee’s 2019 awards were discussed, which include the Charles W. Briggs Award and the John Bell Award. These awards will be presented during the ESTC meeting at AISTech 2019 in Pittsburgh, Pa., USA.
An update was given on the Electric Arc Furnace Roundup. Any updates should be sent to Rob Strain.
The ESTC then discussed the venue and date for the 2020 Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar. The conference will be held in Scottsdale, Ariz., USA, on 3–7 February, with CMC Arizona serving as host. A recap of this year’s EAF seminar can be found on pages 248–250 of this issue.
The Fall 2019 ESTC meeting will be held in Milwaukee, Wis., USA, on Saturday, 7 September 2019, before registration at the Globe-Trotters Member Chapter annual meeting. It will be a joint meeting with the DRI Technology Committee, with a theme focusing on DRI utilization. Charter Steel – Saukville will serve as the tour host.
Stephan Ferenczy then reviewed the 2018 ESTC Germany Study Tour, which took place in December 2018.
Possible locations for a 2020 EAF Study Tour were suggested, including  Japan, Turkey, Russia, South Korea and Sweden. 
Sam Matson of CMC Americas will represent the ESTC at the AIST Digital Transformation Task Force meeting on Wednesday, 8 May, at AISTech 2019.
The ESTC proposed an EAF Young Professional U.S. Study Tour for AIST members 35 years old or younger plus AIST student members, to take place in June 2020. The planning committee will be headed by Zane Voss of CIX LLC and Alex England of Heraeus Electro-Nite Co. LLC.

The ESTC met 24 August 2018, Colorado Springs, Colo., USA. The ESTC reviewed the 2018 Steel Industry Fatalities statistics, followed by a roundtable discussion.
In AISTech 2019 session development, the committee reviewed the 26 abstracts that had been submitted for its consideration. The instructions for papers chair and session chair were discussed. Candidates for session chair should contact Pat Philbin at AIST.
Stephan Ferenczy, AIST Board of Directors Steelmaking Technology Division representative, will represent the ESTC at the AIST Leadership Conference in November.
The ESTC’s annual awards were discussed. For the 2019 Charles W. Briggs Award, the subcommittee is continuing to evaluate the papers to be considered. The 2019 John Bell Award winner has been determined. This award will be presented at AISTech 2019.
Harriet Dutka discussed the 25th annual Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking seminar, to be held in Charleston, S.C., USA, on 4–8 February 2019. Two tours will be available: Nucor Steel–Berkeley and Showa Denko Carbon Inc.
An update on the 2018 EAF Germany Study Tour was given by Dutka and Patrick Hansert. The program outline was reviewed. There are currently 25 participants signed up for the tour.
The 2020 Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking training seminar will be held 3–7 February 2020 in Scottsdale, Ariz., USA. CMC Steel – Arizona will be the host plant.

Electrode data was also presented for discussion for comparison with pounds per ton, number of electrode breaks per month and anode life with DC furnaces.

Gilbert Hutton, ESTC papers chair, reviewed the committee’s technical sessions for AISTech 2018. Seven sessions will be held, comprised of 26 papers. The roles of session chairs and papers chair were discussed.
The 2018 recipients of the Charles W. Briggs Award and the John Bell Award were announced. These two awards will be presented at the ESTC meeting at AISTech 2018.
Nominations for ESTC officers for the 2018–2019 term were approved.
The 2019 EAF Training Seminar  was discussed, which will mark the 25th anniversary of the seminar. It will be held in Charleston, S.C., USA, on 4–8 February 2019. Nucor Steel–Berkeley will serve as the tour host.
Also discussed was the Fall 2018 meeting, which will take place prior to the Globe-Trotters Member Chapter annual meeting. The ESTC will meet on the morning of 24 August 2018 at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., USA. Presentations scheduled for this meeting include:

  • A presentation on foamy slag by Michael Grant, Air Liquide GMS  GmbH.

  • “Recent EAF Electrodes Performance Challenges,” by Stephan Ferenczy, Steel Dynamics Inc. – Structural and Rail Division.

All producers are asked to bring electrode consumption figures from their shops. Separate data by AC or DC, and for DC, identify the bottom life. Sam Matson, CMC Americas, will organize a benchmarking program for electrode performance.

The ESTC met 26 August 2017, Indianapolis, Ind., USA
The ESTC reviewed the 2017 Steel Industry Fatalities report, followed by a roundtable safety discussion. Highlighted was a report by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), titled, “Carbon Monoxide Explosion Hazards in Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking Operations.” An ESTC subcommittee will respond to this report and will provide an update to the ESTC at its next meeting. Members of this subcommittee are Jeremy Jones, Sam Matson and Zane Voss, with Stephan Ferenczy serving as chair.
Gilbert Hutton, ESTC papers chair, provided an update on AISTech 2018 technical session development: 

  • There are six electric steelmaking sessions scheduled.

  • Session chairs have been nominated.

  • A review of papers chair and session chair instructions will be done by Lauren Dlugopolski, AIST technology programs administrator.

Gilbert Hutton and Nick Zsamboky  will represent the ESTC at the AIST Leadership Conference in November.
Winners of the 2018 Charles W. Briggs Award and the 2018 John Bell Award were announced. These awards will be presented at the ESTC meeting during AISTech 2018 in Philadelphia, Pa., USA.
Rob Strain gave an update on the 2018 EAF Roundup. Any revisions or updates should be sent to Strain immediately to be included in the roundup, which will be published in the January 2018 issue of Iron & Steel Technology.
Harriet Dutka reviewed Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar. She provided program changes and encouraged ESTC members to participate and bring along a co-worker.
Dutka then discussed the 2018 EAF Mexico Study Tour and reviewed the agenda. A finalized program will be presented at the next ESTC meeting, when registration for the study tour will begin. This is the ESTC’s fourth study tour.

Lauren Jellison, papers chair, discussed the ESTC’s technical sessions for AISTech 2017. The roles of session chair and papers chair were discussed.
The 2017 AIST Charles W. Briggs Award and 2017 AIST John Bell Award will be presented during the ESTC meeting during AISTech 2017. Election of ESTC officers for 2017–2018 will also take place during AISTech 2017.
An update was given on next year’s Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar. Big River Steel will serve as the host plant.
An update was given on the AIST Process Benchmarker® (APB®) by Sam Matson, ESTC APB chair. A producer base is being developed to benchmark five key performance indicators.
The ESTC will hold its fall 2017 meeting on Saturday, 26 August 2017, in Indianapolis, Ind., USA, prior to the Globe-Trotters Member Chapter annual meeting.
Stephan Ferenczy, Sam Matson, Harriet Dutka and Fernando Martinez shared their experiences from the 2016 Italy EAF Study Tour.
The ESTC will hold the John Stubbles Memorial Session, “Perspectives on CO2 Emissions in EAF Steelmaking,” during AISTech 2018. Jeremy Jones will serve as panel discussion moderator.
Harriet Dutka and Fernando Martinez discussed the 2018 EAF Mexico Study Tour. An agenda was proposed for 2–8 December 2018, starting out from Monterrey and concluding in Mexico City. The final program will be presented at the ESTC’s fall meeting.
The ESTC meeting concluded with a plant tour of Gerdau Long Steel North America Midlothian Mill, followed by a panel discussion. Panelists included Eugene Pretorius, Nucor Steel–Berkeley; Stephan Ferenczy, Steel Dynamics Inc. – Structural and Rail Division; Harriet Dutka, Magnesita Refractories; and Jeremy Jones, CIX LLC. Sam Matson, Commercial Metals Company Americas, served as moderator.

The ESTC reviewed the 2016 Steel Industry Fatalities report, followed by a roundtable safety discussion.
Gilbert Hutton of CMC was nominated ESTC members chair. Hutton will join Lauren  Jellison at the AIST Leadership Conference as representatives of the ESTC.
Lauren Jellison, papers chair, discussed the ESTC’s AISTech 2017 session schedule, which will include six sessions with a parallel session on Tuesday morning. Session chairs were selected for AISTech 2017. A scrap strategies panel discussion will be held on Wednesday morning. 
The recipients of the 2017 Charles W. Briggs Award for Best Paper and the 2017 John Bell Award were selected. These awards will be presented at AISTech 2017 in Nashville, Tenn., USA. 
An update was given on the 2016 EAF Italy Study Tour. Twenty-three ESTC members are registered.
Steve Meyer, EAF Roundup chair, gave an update on the 2017 AIST EAF Roundup.
The program  for Modern Electric  Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar was reviewed. The seminar will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, USA, on 6–10 February 2017,  with Gerdau Long Steel North America Midlothian Mill serving as host plant.

A panel discussion on scrap management strategies was held, with Jeremy Jones serving as moderator. The panelists included:

The ESTC met 3 February 2016, Jacksonville, Fla., USA. The ESTC reviewed the 2015 Steel Industry Fatalities report, followed by a safety roundtable discussion.
Patrick Hansert, ESTC papers chair, reviewed the committee’s five AISTech 2016 technical sessions and discussed the roles of session chair and papers chair.
Nominations for ESTC officers for the 2016–2017 term were confirmed.
Steve Meyer, ESTC roundup chair, reviewed the 2016 AIST EAF Roundup.
The 2016 AIST Charles W. Briggs Award and 2016 AIST John Bell Award will be presented during the ESTC meeting at AISTech 2016.
The 2016 EAF Italy Study Tour, to be held 13–19 November 2016, was discussed, along with plant tour selections. Registration for ESTC producer members will be accepted through 30 April 2016. Open registration will begin 1 May 2016.
The ESTC’s fall 2016 meeting will be held on Saturday, 27 August 2016 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., USA. The meeting will focus on scrap management strategies. Panelists were selected for the meeting’s panel discussion.
Brett McGee discussed the 2017 Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar, which will be held on 6–10 February 2017 in Memphis, Tenn., USA. Nucor Steel Memphis Inc. will be the host plant. Program changes will be announced at AISTech 2016.
Sam Matson provided an update on the AIST Process Benchmarker®, including module parameters and key performance indicators that are needed. There was a strong indication from the ESTC that anonymous data collection would encourage participation from producer members.
Lauren Jellison provided ideas to promote young member involvement in Technology Committees.
The ESTC was given a tour of Gerdau Long Steel North America Jacksonville Mill.
