World Crude Steel Production Continues to Climb through October

22 November 2010 - World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association stood at an estimated 117.56 million tonnes in October 2010 — a 5.2% increase from the previous month (September 2010) and a 2.4% increase vs. October 2009.

YTD Specialty Steel Imports up More than 75% through August

19 November 2010 - Total stainless steel imports reached 414,880 tons in YTD August 2010, a 76.6% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty steel reached 527,245 tons through the same period, up 71.1%.

Allegheny Technologies to Acquire Ladish

18 November 2010 - Allegheny Technologies Inc. (ATI) and Ladish Co., Inc. have entered into a definitive merger agreement whereby ATI will acquire Ladish for an aggregate fully distributed equity value of approximately $778 million. The transaction is expected to be completed in early 2011.

September Steel Shipments down 1.2% from August

17 November 2010 - U.S. steel mills shipped 7,140,369 net tons for the month of September 2010, a 1.2% decrease from the previous month’s shipments and a 23.3% increase from the 5,792,608 net tons shipped in September 2009, according to the latest report from AISI.

Metal Shipments Continue Growth Trend in October

17 November 2010 - North American metals service center shipments continued to increase at robust rates in October, according to the Metals Activity Report from the Metals Service Center Institute. Inventory-to-sales ratios remained stable for both steel and aluminum in the U.S. and Canada.

10 November 2010 - Severstal North America is extending the idling of its primary and hot mill operations at the company’s Sparrows Point Mill through the first quarter of 2011. Sparrows Point will continue to provide product to a limited number of its cold-roll and coated-products customers.

Severstal NA to Increase Flat Rolled Prices

10 November 2010 - Severstal NA announced plans to increase prices immediately by a minimum of $40 per ton for all hot rolled, cold rolled, and galvanized products. The company also is planning to revise pricing for all new orders promised for January 1, 2011 and later.

Olympic Steel Orders Temper Mill, Cut-to-Length Line for Gary Site

10 November 2010 - Olympic Steel, Inc. has signed agreements to purchase a new temper mill and cut-to-length line; the company plans to locate it on U.S. Steel’s Gary Works facility in Gary, Ind. The temper mill equipment is expected to be operational in the first half of 2012.

OSHA Fines Republic Engineered Products

09 November 2010 - The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Republic Engineered Products Inc. with one alleged willful, four repeat, and eight serious safety violations for exposing its workers to fall hazards, failing to provide protective equipment, and failing to maintain equipment at its Lorain, Ohio, facility.

Canadian Steelworkers Critical of U.S. Steel Lockout

09 November 2010 - U.S. Steel recently locked out 900 workers at its Hamilton Works facility for refusing “major, unilateral contract concessions,” according to Canadian steelworkers. The cuts include pension changes that also would affect 9000 retired workers receiving pensions.

AK Steel to Increase Carbon Steel Prices

08 November 2010 - AK Steel will increase current spot market base prices for all carbon flat-rolled steel products effective immediately with new orders.
