11/12/2010 - The American Iron and Steel Institute is welcoming Gerdau Ameristeel - North America’s fourth-largest steel company - as its newest member.
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) is welcoming Gerdau Ameristeel — North America’s fourth-largest steel company and second-largest minimill steel producer — as its newest member.
“As Chairman of AISI, it is a pleasure to welcome Mario Longhi to the Board of Directors and to also welcome all the employees of Ameristeel to the AISI family,” said AISI Chairman Daniel R. DiMicco, who is Chairman, President and CEO of Nucor Corp. “Never has it been more critical than it is today for our industry to speak out loud and clear and with a unified voice on major policy issues that are impacting American manufacturers.
“Mario Longhi and Gerdau Ameristeel have been strong allies on steel industry policy issues and now, as a member of AISI, the opportunity of working together, shoulder-to-shoulder, will strengthen and enhance further the competitiveness of our industry both here at home and on a global basis,” added DiMicco.
“I’m pleased to welcome Gerdau Ameristeel President and CEO Mario Longhi to the AISI Board of Directors,” said AISI President and CEO Thomas J. Gibson. He noted that the company was joining at a time when AISI is aggressively working to advance policies “that improve the competitiveness of North American steelmakers across a range of issue areas.” He said these include restoring a healthy manufacturing sector and creating millions of new jobs through removing artificial barriers built by our trading partners and enforcing our trade laws, rebuilding our transportation infrastructure, encouraging government to invest in research and development and developing a national energy policy that creates low carbon, affordable and abundant sources of energy.
