YTD Specialty Steel Imports up More than 75% through August
11/19/2010 - Total stainless steel imports reached 414,880 tons in YTD August 2010, a 76.6% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty steel reached 527,245 tons through the same period, up 71.1%.
Total stainless steel imports reached 414,880 tons in YTD August 2010, a 76.6% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
Total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 527,245 tons through the same period, a 71.1% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period.
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD August 2010 compared to the same 2009 eight-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
Stainless steel sheet/strip: Imports in YTD August 2010 were 247,678 tons, an 87.3% increase compared to YTD August 2009. U.S. consumption was 816,352 tons through the same period, a 37.3% increase, while eight-month import penetration was 30.3%, an 8.1 percentage point increase from
2009.
YTD August 2010 imports of stainless steel plate were 53,929 tons, a 124.6% increase compared to YTD August 2009. U.S. consumption was 154,026 tons through the same period, a 38.1% increase, while eight-month import penetration was 35.0%, a 13.5 percentage point increase from 2009.
YTD August 2010 imports of stainless steel bar: Imports in YTD August 2010 were 68,605 tons, a 34.5% increase compared to YTD August 2009. U.S. consumption was 140,229 tons through the same period, a 40.6% increase, while eight-month import penetration was 48.9%, a 2.2 percentage point decrease from 2009.
YTD August 2010 imports of stainless steel rod: Imports in YTD August 2010 were 16,070 tons, a 98.2% increase compared to YTD August 2009. U.S. consumption was 42,160 tons through the same period, a 103.2% increase, while eight-month import penetration was 38.1%, a 1.0 percentage point decrease from 2009.
YTD August 2010 imports of stainless steel wire: Imports in YTD August 2010 were 28,598 tons, a 45.9% increase compared to YTD August 2009. U.S. consumption was 31,717 tons through the same period, a 14.8% increase, while eight-month import penetration was 90.2%, a 19.2 percentage point increase from 2009.
Through YTD August 2010, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 414,880 tons, a 76.6% increase compared to YTD August 2009. U.S. consumption was 1,184,484 tons through the same period, a 38.7% increase, while eight-month import penetration was 35.0%, a 7.5 percentage point increase from 2009.
YTD August 2010 imports of alloy tool steel: Imports in YTD August 2010 were 51,459 tons, a 112.7% increase compared to YTD August 2009; U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
YTD August 2010 imports of electrical steel: Imports in YTD August 2010 were 60,906 tons, a 24.2% increase compared to YTD August 2009. U.S. consumption was 126,192 tons through the same period, a 14.0% decrease from YTD August 2009, while eight-month import penetration was 48.3%, a 14.9 percentage point increase from 2009.
Through YTD August 2010, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 527,245 tons, a 71.1% increase compared to YTD August 2009. U.S. consumption was 1,342,215 tons through the same period, a 32.1% increase, while eight-month import penetration was 39.3%, a 9.0 percentage point increase from 2009.
