2004 Finished Steel Imports 55 Percent Higher than 2003

26 January 2005 - Based on preliminary Census Bureau data for December, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that the United States imported a total of 35,662,000 net tons of steel in 2004, reflecting a 54.2% increase over 2003 total steel imports.

California Steel Reports Record Results for 2004

26 January 2005 - California Steel Industries, Inc. (CSI) reported net income of $35.1 million on sales of $339.8 million for the fourth quarter, and net income of $109.34 million on sales of $1.250 billion for the full year of 2004, both record results for the company, now in its twentieth year of operations.

EPA Region 5 Issues Administrative Order, Citation

24 January 2005 - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has issued an administrative consent order to Rotary Lift that requires the company to comply with the state operating permit issued to its Madison, Ind., metal fabrication facility. Rotary Lift had told EPA that it believed it had violated its permit.

20 January 2005 - Industry and government officials met January 12-13 at a Paris conference organized by the OECD and the International Iron and Steel Institute. The participants, representing economies accounting for over 95% of crude steel production, confirmed the need for continued dialogue on developments and emerging issues in the industry. Participants expect the current buoyant market conditions in steel to continue throughout 2005 and into 2006.

World Steel Production Passes Billion-Tonne Mark in 2004

20 January 2005 - Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that world crude steel production stood at 1.05 billion tonnes in 2004. This represents a worldwide increase in production of 8.8% compared to 2003. Excluding China, world production rose by 4.5% in 2004.

19 January 2005 - Charter Steel has contracted Core Furnace Systems for turn-key supply of four STC (Short Time Cycle) furnaces at the company’s Rising Sun, Ohio, coil processing and distribution facility. The installation will bring the number of STC furnaces on this site to eight.
