About the Program

Sara Hornby was awarded this prestigious annual bursary which involves touring globally for 12 months to present to students and young professionals iterations of her work: The Green Steel Revolution. In this webinar, Hornby takes a look at key aspects of the many pathways laid out in recent times by the industry and challenges some of the earlier assumptions made, planned versus actual progress, as well as analyzing the technical, logistical and social challenges that remain. Summarizing with suggested actions and solutions, this webinar is a must for all AIST members involved in or interested in the successful “Greening of our industry.” An extended question-and-answer segment will provide many learnings for all participants.

Moderators

Nick Aubry, Process Engineer, Hatch Ltd.’s Pyrometallurgy Sector Practice

Nick Aubry is a process engineer in Hatch Ltd.’s Pyrometallurgy Sector Practice. His experience includes iron- and steelmaking project work focusing on blast furnace ironmaking, benchmarking, modeling, optimization, and continuous improvement. He has a passion for solving some of the biggest challenges facing the iron and steel industry, namely trying to reduce the carbon intensity of iron- and steelmaking. Aubry has satisfied his passion by helping clients understand their options to reduce emissions, be it assessing incremental changes to their ironmaking processes or working to understand transformational changes to achieve long term near-zero emission goals. He has a B.Eng. in chemical engineering and management from McMaster University and is a Professional Engineer in Ontario.

Poliana Araujo, Process Engineer, WSP’s Energy, Resource and Industry Sector

Poliana Araujo is a process engineer in WSP’s Energy, Resource and Industry Sector and a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario. She holds a B.Eng. in metallurgical engineering, specializing in steel production processes, plant optimization and sustainability-driven initiatives. Her expertise includes scrap optimization, focusing on cost reduction through efficient scrap management. She has worked extensively with electric arc furnace operations, focusing on process optimization, including burner profiles to improve thermal efficiency and reduce operational costs. Araujo is experienced in secondary refining processes, ensuring steel chemistry consistency for high-quality steel production. Her experience extends to blast furnace operations, where she has worked with both charcoal- and coke-based ironmaking processes, optimizing reducing agent ratios for maximum efficiency. Her career reflects a commitment to improving operational efficiency and advancing the steel industry’s transition toward a more sustainable future. She is passionate about applying innovative solutions that bridge industry best practices and emerging technologies.

Presentation: The Green Steel Revolution, Sarah Hornby, Owner, Global Strategic Solutions Inc.

Presenter Bio: Sara Hornby, variously described as a trailblazer and an inspiration for ambitious women, has continually proven nothing is out of reach for women in engineering. The first woman to graduate from Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) with a BScHons in metallurgy, she spent her early career in the U.K. working for Firth Brown Tools Engineering and British Steel Corp. Her initial Canadian and U.S. Air Liquide roles, developing new technologies and bringing best available technologies to the metals industry (whilst managing multidisciplinary, multilocation team members), coupled with other electric arc furnace steelmaking optimization positions (Tenova Goodfellow, Midrex, Linde, Intertech and TMS International), put her in good stead to set up her own company, Global Strategic Solutions Inc., which supplies expert consultancy and expert witness to the metals and related industries.

Hornby holds five patents and has authored over 136 international papers, seminars and courses. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3) and was their 2022 Hadfield Medal and Prize winner. In 2020, she was the recipient of the AIST Benjamin Fairless Award (AIST/AIME) and the AIST John Bell Award (AIST Electric Steelmaking Technology Committee). In November 2023, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering by SHU in recognition of her outstanding contribution to engineering and the international steel industry.
