Evraz JV Creates Largest Steel Distribution Company in the CIS

27 December 2010 - Evraz Group SA has closed a deal to acquire 100% of the shares of Cassar World Investments Corp., which controls 99.9% of OAO INPROM, a leading metal service company in Russia. The deal will create a joint venture comprising the assets of EvrazMetall and INPROM that will be the largest steel distribution company in the CIS.

SMS Meer Modernizes Wire Rod Outlet for Amsteel Mills

23 December 2010 - Malaysian steel producer Amsteel Mills Sdn. Bhd. has placed an order with SMS Meer for the modernization of the wire rod outlet in the wire rod and bar mill at its Banting works in the state of Selangor. The modernization is to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2011.

Posco to Start 4-Team, 2-Shift Schedule Next Year

23 December 2010 - Posco will officially start the 4-team, 2-shift schedule at 16 teams and factories on January 1. The decision was based on an employee vote, with more than 60% voting in favor; the schedule was under test operation since this past July.

Mechel Launches New Production Line at Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant

21 December 2010 - Mechel OAO launched a new production line for steel electrode copper-coated wire on December 18 at its Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant subsidiary. The new production line can produce 7,900 tonnes annually.

Posco to Establish Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel Plant in Vietnam

21 December 2010 - Posco recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a cold-rolled stainless steel plant in Vietnam’s Nhon Trach Industrial Complex. Posco VST expects to install a 100,000-tonne scale rolling mill and 200,000-tonne scale annealing equipment in the first phase by February 2012.

Second Blast Furnace Fired Up at ThyssenKrupp CSA in Brazil

21 December 2010 - Blast furnace 2 at the ThyssenKrupp CSA steel mill in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro state was recently fired up on schedule and without problems—five months after blast furnace 1, which is now producing more than 6,500 tonnes of hot metal per day, close to its full capacity.

November World Crude Steel Production Slips 2.8% from Previous Month

21 December 2010 - World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association stood at an estimated 114.12 million tonnes in November 2010 — a 2.8% decrease from the previous month (October 2010) and a 5.1% increase vs. November 2009.

VSB Produces First Steel Pipe from Steelworks in Brazil

20 December 2010 - Vallourec & Sumitomo Tubos do Brasil Ltda (VSB) began a test operation at its integrated seamless pipe steelworks, successfully piercing its first billet recently. Following the completion of the rolling mill, upstream facilities including charcoal blast furnaces will begin operation in the second quarter of 2011.

SMS Siemag to Deliver Hot and Cold Rolling Complex to Ma’aden-Alcoa

17 December 2010 - Ma’aden-Alcoa has placed an order with SMS Siemag for the supply of a complete integrated hot and cold rolling complex for aluminum flat products, including the electrical and automation package. The mills are expected to commence operation at the end of 2012 in Ras Az Zawr, Saudi Arabia.

Metal Shipments Rise Sharply in November

16 December 2010 - VIZ-Stal LLC, a Yekaterinburg-based subsidiary of NLMK, has successfully completed the construction of eight high-temperature annealing furnaces for transformer steel production. The facilities are expected to be launched in December.

ArcelorMittal Buys Call Options, Sells Treasury Shares

16 December 2010 - ArcelorMittal has acquired euro-denominated call options on 61,728,395 of its own shares with a strike price of EUR 20.25 per share, and sold 26.48 million treasury shares through an over-the-counter block trade for a price of EUR 26.4227 per share.
