Posco will officially start the 4-team, 2-shift schedule at 16 teams and factories next year. The decision was based on an employee vote, with more than 60% voting in favor. The work schedule was under test operation since this past July.
The Pohang Steelworks Sinter Factory, Gwangyang Steelworks Steelmaking Factory 1, and 14 other teams and factories of Gwangyang and Pohang are included.
Various efforts including duty multi-functionality, reduced workload, expanded resting areas, and improvement activities for resting environment were carried out during the six-month trial of the work schedule. 99.8% of the shift workers at the 16 test site locations participated in the vote, with an average 75.2% voting for the transition to this new schedule.
Posco plans to carry out votes next April at the 20 teams and factories that have been in test operation of this schedule since mid-October. The company also says it will continuously improve necessary elements of the schedule through close discussions with the labor union.
The 4-team, 2-shift schedule is operated with 2 of the 4 teams working 12-hour shifts each day while the remaining 2 teams rest, resulting in 191 days off as opposed to the 103 days under a 4-team, 3-shift schedule.
Posco expects this new working schedule to let employees gain plenty of rest after focused shifts, leading to leisure and self-improvement activities, while the company reduces loss due to the frequent shift changes, increasing productivity.
