November World Crude Steel Production Slips from Previous Month

21 December 2011 - World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association stood at an estimated 115.51 million tonnes for November 2011, 6.8% lower than the 123.98 million tonnes reported for the previous month (October 2011) and 1.1% higher in comparison with November 2010.

Metal Shipment Growth Slows in November

21 December 2011 - Service center shipments grew at slightly slower rates in November for both steel and aluminum in the U.S. and Canada, according to the latest Metals Activity Report from the Metals Service Center Institute. Steel inventory levels declined in the U.S. and Canada from last month.

CMC Announces Guidance for First Quarter 2012 Earnings

20 December 2011 - Commercial Metals Co. expects to report earnings in the range of $0.87 to $0.97 per diluted share for its first quarter ended November 30, 2011, a substantial increase over the $0.01 earnings per share recorded for the first quarter of fiscal 2011.

20 December 2011 - Members of United Steelworkers of America (USW) Local 1915 have ratified a new three-year labor agreement with AK Steel’s wholly-owned subsidiary, AK Tube LLC.

USITC Reaches Decision on Stainless Wire Rod from India

19 December 2011 - The U.S. International Trade Commission determined that revoking the existing antidumping duty order on stainless steel wire rod from India would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time. Therefore, the existing order on imports of this product from India will remain in place.

Timken and USW Local 1123 Agree on Proposed Contract

19 December 2011 - The Timken Co. and the United Steelworkers Local 1123 have reached agreement on a new five-year contract. A ratification vote for the new contract is being scheduled.

Steel Dynamics Provides Fourth Quarter Earnings Guidance

19 December 2011 - Steel Dynamics expects to report fourth quarter earnings in the range of $0.08 to $0.12 per diluted share, a drop from earnings of $0.19 per diluted share in the previous quarter.

AK Steel Provides Fourth-Quarter Guidance

16 December 2011 - AK Steel opted to provide guidance later in the fourth quarter when it had more information upon which to base its estimates. The company now expects shipments of approximately 1.4 million tons in the 2011 fourth quarter, or about 2% higher than the third quarter of 2011, and about 3% higher than in the year-ago fourth quarter.

Stainless Imports up 31% Through YTD September 2011

15 December 2011 - Total stainless imports reached 606,917 tons through YTD September 2011, a 30.9% increase compared to YTD September 2010 according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 773,137 tons through the same period, a 30.3% increase.
