October Steel Shipments Down 0.2% from September

U.S. steel mills shipped 7,933,653 net tons for the month of October 2011, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
 
The October total represents a 0.2% decrease from the 7,947,262 net tons shipped in the previous month, September 2011, and a 19.7% increase from the 6,629,195 net tons shipped in October 2010. 
 
Year-to-date shipments are 76,374,860, a 9.4% increase vs. shipments of 69,783,780 for the comparable year-ago period. Through the first ten months 2011 shipments would annualize at 92 million tons.
 
A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes:
 
·         Cold rolled sheet, + 3%
·         Hot dip galvanized sheets and strip, + 1%
·         Hot rolled sheet, - 6%
 
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. The Institute comprises 25 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 120 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
