SMS Siemag Commissions 2nd Production Line at Severstal Columbus
12/22/2011 - SMS Siemag has commissioned a second production line with an electric steel plant, second CSP® casting strand, and a push-pull pickling line at Severstal Columbus.
SMS Siemag has successfully commissioned a second production line at Severstal Columbus comprising an electric steel plant, second CSP® casting strand, and a push-pull pickling line for downstream processing of the strips.
Commissioning of the second production line expands the facility’s annual capacity for high-grade steel to 2.7 million tons. Products will include among others autobody sheet and high strength steels for the automotive industry, API grades for the pipe and tube industry, and deep-drawing steels for suitable areas of application.
Severstal will use its new CSP plant to produce hot strip in widths from 900 to 1880 mm and gages from 1.3 to 12.7 mm, making it the world's widest CSP plant according to SMS Siemag. The scope of supply for the CSP comprised the complete X-Pact® electrical and automation package, level-1 automation system including technological control systems and level-2 automation with the process models and an HMI (Human Machine Interface) for operation of the plant.
For downstream processing of the strips, SMS Siemag built and commissioned a new push-pull pickling line, on which Severstal Columbus processed the first coil in mid-November 2011. The line, which has an annual capacity of 540,000 tons, uncoils, levels, pickles, side trims and recoils the hot strip. The line features plastic tanks in the turbulence pickling section. SMS Siemag also installed a hot-dip galvanizing line with an annual capacity of 544,000 tons as well as a horizontal furnace at the same works.
