Stainless Imports up 31% Through YTD September 2011
12/15/2011 - Total stainless imports reached 606,917 tons through YTD September 2011, a 30.9% increase compared to YTD September 2010 according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 773,137 tons through the same period, a 30.3% increase.
Total stainless imports reached 606,917 tons through YTD September 2011, a 30.9% increase compared to YTD September 2010 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA). Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 773,137 tons through the same period, a 30.3% increase compared to YTD September 2010.
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD September 2011 as compared to the same nine-month period in 2010.
YTD September 2011 stainless steel sheet/strip imports were 313,342 tons, a 12.9% increase compared to YTD September 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,211,765 tons through the same period, a 31.7% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 25.9%, a 4.3 percentage point decrease from 2010.
YTD September 2011 stainless steel plate imports were 129,740 tons, a 118.0% increase compared to YTD September 2010. U.S. consumption was 270,663 tons through the same period, a 50.2% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 47.9%, a 14.9 percentage point increase from 2010.
YTD September 2011 stainless steel bar imports were 107,671 tons, a 41.1% increase compared to YTD September 2010. U.S. consumption was 198,494 tons through the same period, a 25.5% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 54.2%, a 5.9 percentage point increase from 2010.
YTD September 2011 stainless steel rod imports were 20,984 tons, a 17.8% increase compared to YTD September 2010. U.S. consumption was 55,964 tons through the same period, a 14.0% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 37.5%, a 1.2 percentage point increase from 2010.
YTD September 2011 stainless steel wire imports were 35,180 tons, an 8.2% increase compared to YTD September 2010. U.S. consumption was 42,397 tons through the same period, a 0.2% decrease, while nine-month import penetration was 83.0%, a 6.5 percentage point increase from 2010.
Through YTD September 2011, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 606,917 tons, a 30.9% increase compared to YTD September 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,779,282 tons over the same period, a 31.8% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 34.1%, a 0.3 percentage point decrease from 2010.
YTD September 2011 alloy tool steel imports were 81,712 tons, a 38.4% increase compared to YTD September 2010; U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
YTD September 2011 electrical steel imports were 84,508 tons, a 20.1% increase compared to YTD September 2010. U.S. consumption was 168,937 tons through the same period, a 17.1% increase from YTD September 2010, while nine-month import penetration was 50.0%, a 1.2 percentage point increase from 2010.
Through YTD September 2011, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 773,137 tons, a 30.3% increase compared to YTD September 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,991,424 tons through the same period, a 30.1% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 38.8%, the same as 2010.
