Record Levels of Steel Scrap Consumption Announced on America Recycles Day

16 November 2012 - In celebration of America Recycles Day, the Steel Recycling Institute announced that the recycling rate for the world’s most recycled material – steel – is at an all-time high of 92%. More than 85 million tons of steel scrap was consumed by steelmaking furnaces in 2011—an increase of nearly 10 million tons versus 2010.

North American Service Centers See Pick Up in October

15 November 2012 - The slowdown in shipments from U.S. and Canadian service centers from 2011 levels which began in August, eased significantly in October, the Metals Service Center Institute reports.

Preliminary September U.S. Imports Decline 9% vs. August

24 October 2012 - Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that the U.S. imported a total of 2,440,000 tons of steel in September, including 1,886,000 tons of finished steel (down 9% and 8%, respectively, from August final data).

August U.S. Steel Shipments Up 5% from July

22 October 2012 - The American Iron and Steel Institute reported that for the month of August 2012, U.S. steel mills shipped 8,377,162 tons, a 5.9% increase from the 7,910,486 tons shipped in the previous month, July 2012, and a 0.9% increase from the 8,304,638 tons shipped in August 2011.

September World Crude Steel Production Was Flat Year-on-Year

22 October 2012 - World crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 124 million tonnes in September 2012, recording no change compared to September 2011.
