The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) awarded authors from ArcelorMittal Global R&D and Honda R&D the 2012 Institute Medal for their winning paper, "Characterization of Edge Fracture in Various Types of Advanced High Strength Steel." Authors James Dykeman and Skye Malcolm of Honda R&D Americas Inc., and Jayanth Chintamani, and Gang Huang of ArcelorMittal Global R&D, were presented the Institute Medal by AISI Chairman Joe Carrabba, who is also chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cliffs Natural Resources, Inc. Hong Zhu , Naveen Ramisetti and Benda Yan of ArcelorMittal, not present at the ceremony, also received the award.

"The Institute Medal is AISI’s highest technical award and shines a light on the important work that is essential to meeting our customer’s needs and to our industry’s future prosperity," said AISI President and CEO Thomas J. Gibson. "We congratulate the authors on their contribution to furthering operational excellence in producing advanced high strength steels."

Established in 1927, the Institute Medal and two Finalist Medals are awarded for technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry. Papers are judged on the potential value to future prosperity of the industry, technical excellence and originality, effective communication and breadth of interest to AISI members.

The inscription on the medal reads: "American Iron and Steel Institute Medal, established by American Iron and Steel Institute, October 28, 1927, to perpetuate the memory of Elbert H. Gary, founder and first president, and to stimulate improvement in the iron and steel and allied industries."

The Finalist medals were awarded to:

• "Thermal Mapping Software and Its Use in Reducing Longitudinal Face Cracks," authored by Dr. Asish K. Sinha, Dr. Thinium T. Natarajan, Dr. Thomas J. Piccone, John B. "Bill" Jones and Doug E. Ashley of United States Steel Corporation Research and Technology Center; and
• "Testing of Flame-Retardant Fabrics," authored by Jeffrey J. Becker, Naveen Gupta and Christopher C. Snyder, Jr. of United States Steel Corporation Research and Technology Center and Hope M. Dropp of United States Steel Corporation’s Safety and Industrial Hygiene Department.

Recognition of the Institute Medal Winners and Finalists took place on Wednesday, 7 November 2012 during the AISI Board of Directors Reception and Dinner at the Fairfax Hotel in Washington, D.C.
