Nippon Steel, Ternium Sign MoU to Form Joint Venture in Mexico

18 May 2010 - Nippon Steel and Ternium have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a joint venture that is expected to build a hot-dip galvanizing plant in the vicinity of Monterrey City, and subsequently manufacture and sell high-grade, high-quality galvanized and galvannealed steel sheets.

Severstal Invests in Iron Ore Projects in Republic of Congo and Gabon

14 May 2010 - OAO Severstal has announced the multi-stage acquisition of new shares in Core Mining Ltd., which controls exploration licenses for the Avima iron ore deposit in the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) and the Kango iron ore deposit in the Republic of Gabon. The investment will be used to fund Core’s exploration program for both projects.

Posco Breaks Ground for Plate Processing Center in Dalian

14 May 2010 - The steelmaker recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for Posco-CDPPC, a new plate facility, in the Lingang Industrial Zone, which is located on Changxing Island, Dalian. Posco plans to supply major shipbuilding companies with an annual thick plate production of 200,000 tonnes.

First Installation of Siemens LiquiRob at Riva Group EAF

13 May 2010 - The Riva Group has become the first steel producer to use the Siemens LiquiRob robot system at an electric arc furnace. The technology has been installed in its French plant in Neuves-Maisons where it handles sampling and temperature and Celox measurements.

SMMD, Hokuriku Electric Conclude Absorption-Type Corporate Split Contract

13 May 2010 - Hokuriku Electric and Sumitomo Metal Micro Devices (SMMD) have concluded a contract on the absorption-type corporate split, whereby the Systems Division of Hokuriku Electric will be split and succeeded to SMMD on August 2, 2010. SMMD is scheduled to change its company name to HDK Micro Devices that same day.

Japanese Firms to Establish JV for Aluminum Forged Parts in China

12 May 2010 - Kobe Steel, Mitsui, and Toyota Tsusho have signed an agreement to form a joint-venture company, provisionally called Kobe Aluminum Automotive Products (China) Co., Ltd., to produce and market aluminum forgings for automotive suspensions. Following construction of a plant, production is anticipated to begin in August 2012.

Arvedi Grants Acceptance to Siemens for Endless Strip Line

12 May 2010 - Acciaieria Arvedi SpA has issued the Final Acceptance Certificate to Siemens VAI for its new Arvedi ESP line in Cremona, which has successfully cast 80-mm thin strands at speeds in excess of six meters per minute and endlessly rolled hot strip down to a thickness of 0.8 mm.

10 May 2010 - JSW Steel Ltd. reported crude steel production of 506,000 tonnes for April 2010, a 20% increase compared to the 422,000 tonnes produced in the corresponding month last fiscal year.

SMS Meer Supplies VCC Rolling Mill to Daehan Steel

10 May 2010 - Daehan Steel of South Korea has placed an order with SMS Meer for the supply of a Vertical Compact Coiler rolling mill for compact coils. The mill, with an annual capacity of 450,000 tonnes, is scheduled to go into operation in April 2011.
