Posco Completes Automotive Sheet Processing Center in Alabama
09/21/2010 - Posco recently completed its POSCO-AAPC automotive steel sheet processing center near Birmingham, which can process 120,000 tons automotive steel sheets annually.
Posco celebrated last week the start of operations for its POSCO-AAPC automotive steel sheet processing center in the Jefferson County Industrial Complex near Birmingham, Ala.
Built at a total investment of 19 million USD, POSCO-AAPC (POSCO-America Alabama Processing Center) is a cutting-edge integrated automotive steel sheet processing center with an annual processing capacity of 120,000 tons of steel materials. The facility is intended to strengthen sales service activities to global automobile manufacturers in Japan and Europe, as well as electrical steel sheet clients.
The southeast region of the U.S. — including the Birmingham region — is a growing manufacturing base for a number of global automobile manufacturers such as Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai Kia. Parts companies such as Bosch, Benteler, Lear and 400 other parts companies have also continued to gather in the region.
Demand for steel is forecast to continue increasing in this region, particularly as U.S. automobile and parts manufacturers moved and expanded their factories into the Southeast region and Volkswagen invested 1 billion USD in the Tennessee region to construct a factory with an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles capacity that is scheduled to start up by 2011. Other regional expansions include Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Hyundai Kia.
