OSHA Penalizes Sheffield Steel for Failing to Correct Safety Violations

05 March 2004 - The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued citations to Sheffield Steel Corp. of Sand Springs, Okla., for failing to correct previous safety violations. The Department has proposed $81,500 in penalties for the alleged violations.

Steel Imports on the Rise Again in January

25 February 2004 - Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that imports of steel into the United States were up 35% over December 2003 imports. Finished steel imports were up by 24% over the same time period. This was the highest figure for total steel imports since January 2003 and the highest figure for finished steel imports since March of last year.

Slater Steel Reaches Agreement on Sale of Sorel Forge

04 February 2004 - Sorel Forge Inc., a subsidiary of Slater Steel, has entered into a definitive agreement to sell substantially all of its assets, on a going-concern basis, to the Tricap Restructuring Fund. The transaction, which is expected to close on, or about, March 1, 2004, is subject to certain conditions, including approval from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Steel Imports Down Through the End of 2003

28 January 2004 - Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that December imports of steel into the United States were 10.7% lower than in November, with finished imports down 5.8% compared to November. For 2003 as a whole, total and finished steel imports are down 29.6 and 23.7% respectively, compared to 2002.

21 January 2004 - Universal Stainless & Alloy Products, Inc. reported net income of $2.6 million on record sales of $37.0 million for the fourth quarter and net income of $7.1 million on record sales of $120.6 million for the full year 2004.

21 January 2004 - Sterling Steel Co., LLC has ordered a new Danieli endless welding rolling (EWR) line for its 12-inch rod mill in Sterling, Ill.

Slater Steel Obtains Court Approval for CCAA Extension

13 January 2004 - Slater Steel Inc. announced that the Ontario Superior Court of Justice has extended the Court protection period granted to the company under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) to March 1, 2004. The extension is intended to allow Slater to proceed with an orderly wind-down of both the Atlas Stainless Steels and Hamilton Specialty Bar facilities under the protection of the CCAA.

Canadian Tribunal Rescinds Decision on Imported Concrete Rebar

12 January 2004 - The Canadian International Trade Tribunal has rescinded its January 2000 finding regarding concrete reinforcing bar from the Republic of Cuba, the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Turkey. The Tribunal’s decision follows an expiry review conducted in accordance with the Special Import Measures Act.

Nucor to Form Joint Venture With Ambassador Steel

12 January 2004 - Nucor Corp. has entered into an agreement with Ambassador Steel Corp. to form Nufab Rebar LLC, a rebar fabrication joint venture that will grow through both greenfield projects and the acquisition of existing assets.
