Steelworkers Renew Strike Mandate at AltaSteel

03 June 2005 - Members of the United Steelworkers' Local 5220 at Stelco Inc.'s Edmonton subsidiary, AltaSteel, have voted 97% in favor of renewing the strike mandate first granted to the local's bargaining committee last September during ongoing contract negotiations. The mandate had been renewed in February.

Stelco Revises Earnings Guidance

03 June 2005 - Stelco Inc. has adjusted its earnings expectations for the second quarter of 2005. The company says that while it continues to expect solid performance from a historical perspective, second quarter operating earnings are now expected to be considerably below the level of the first quarter of 2005. The decrease is attributed primarily to lower spot market prices, higher energy costs and the flow-through of higher-cost inventory produced in the first quarter.

Steel Imports Continue to Surge in April

03 June 2005 - The United States imported a total of 3,022,000 net tons of steel in April, according to the latest report issued by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The report, which is based on preliminary Census Bureau data, shows that April import totals include 2,368,000 net tons of finished steel. Total imports were 9.0% higher in April compared to March 2005, while finished steel imports were 5.0% higher than in March 2005. (Comparisons are based on the previous month’s final Census Bureau data, not preliminary data.)

02 June 2005 - Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. has reached an agreement to acquire Chapel Steel Corp., headquartered in Spring House, Pa. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

China, for its Hydraulic Automatic Gauge Control (HAGC) Cylinders and Automatic Width Control (AWC) Cylinders. The cylinders will be installed in a new Hot Strip Mill that Jinan Iron and Steel is currently erecting.
