Stainless Steel Imports up 60% Through May 2010

23 August 2010 - Total stainless steel imports reached 235,739 tons in YTD May 2010, 60.0% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty steel imports were up 46.7% through the same period.

19 August 2010 - Ryerson Inc. has opened a new service center in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Expected to begin operations August 30, 2010, the facility will serve as a general line service center and carry a range of carbon, aluminum, and stainless steel products in different shapes.

Illinois EPA Announces Loan to Clean Up Northwestern Steel and Wire Site

18 August 2010 - Illinois EPA Director Doug Scott and other state and local officials have announced the approval of a $1 million Illinois Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund award to the City of Sterling to mitigate asbestos contamination at the former Northwestern Steel and Wire Plant 1 site and to ready it for redevelopment.

Metal Shipment Growth Rate Slows in July 2010

18 August 2010 - The rate of growth of steel and aluminum shipments from metals service centers in the United States and Canada slowed in July, according to the latest Metals Activity Report from the Metals Service Center Institute. Inventories of both metals increased in both countries.

ALJ Announces 3rd Quarter Earnings

18 August 2010 - ALJ, the parent company of Kentucky Electric, reported net income of $4.49 million on net sales of $30.97 million for the third quarter, and net income of $5.22 million on net sales of $80.45 million for the nine months ended June 30, 2010.

June Steel Shipments Dip Slightly from May

17 August 2010 - U.S. steel mills shipped 7,292,203 net tons for the month of June 2010, a 0.7% decrease from net tons shipped in the previous month and a 52.0% increase from net tons shipped in June 2009, according to the latest report from AISI.

12 August 2010 - The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Wisconsin Polishing and Plating Inc. of West Allis, Wis., with $75,400 in proposed penalties for allowing workers to be overexposed to chromium and chromic acid.

Russel Metals Reports Stronger Q2 2010 Net Earnings

12 August 2010 - Russel Metals Inc. announced second-quarter earnings of $19 million, or $0.31 per share, an improvement of $0.28 per share from the first quarter of 2010. These results were stronger than both the comparable adjusted net earnings for the second quarter of 2009 of $0.10 per share and the reported loss of $0.41 per share.
