Mittal Enters Mining Development Agreement with Government of Liberia

01 September 2005 - Mittal Steel Co. NV has entered into a Mining Development Agreement with the Government of Liberia. Once it has been ratified, the agreement will give Mittal Steel access to about 1 billion tonnes of rich iron ore reserves in Western Liberia.

01 September 2005 - Arcelor has signed a worldwide agreement on principles of corporate social responsibility with the International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) and the European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF). The global steelmaker is the first company in the steel industry to sign such an agreement.

Quanex Reports Fiscal 3rd Quarter Results

26 August 2005 - Quanex Corp. reported record income from continuing operations of $45.0 million on record net sales of $98.8 million for the fiscal third quarter. Diluted earnings per share from continuing operations were $1.71, a third quarter record and more than double year ago quarterly results of $0.82.

Latest MEPS Forecasts for World Steel Prices

12 August 2005 - MEPS (International) Ltd. reports that global markets continue to be oversupplied. By mid-year, world output of steel was 7.6% higher than the same period a year earlier. MEPS attributes the oversupply to continued overproduction in Asia, particularly China. Steel supply has been reduced recently across Europe, North America and South America. The situation is now recognized as being so critical that South Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese steelmakers are also cutting back in an effort to prop up prices.

ITC to Conduct Sunset Review of Carbon and Alloy Seamless Pipe Orders

08 August 2005 - The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) voted to conduct full five-year sunset reviews for antidumping duty orders on imports of carbon and alloy seamless standard, line, and pressure pipe from the Czech Republic, Japan, Mexico, Romania, and South Africa.

Danieli to Supply Superflexible Minimill for Siderurgica Balboa

01 August 2005 - Siderurgica Balboa, Spain, has contracted Danieli to supply a new 1.2 million tonne/year superflexible minimill. The new plant is one of the largest projects of this kind ever undertaken in Europe and will produce small and medium size long products from 5.5 diameter wire rod up to 600 mm H-beam.

Siemens VAI to Supply Hot Strip Mill for Mittal Steel

01 August 2005 - Mittal Steel has announced plans to build a new hot strip mill in Cracow, Poland. The new 2.4 million tonnes/year mill, which will be able to roll steel strips up to 2100 mm wide, will be among the largest of its kind in Europe.

ThyssenKrupp Stahl and Dusseldorf Government Conclude Air Pollution Control Agreement

01 August 2005 - ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG and the District Government of Düsseldorf have signed an agreement to reduce particulate air pollution in the north of Duisburg. The agreement was prompted by the District Government’s requirement to draw up an action plan. This links up with the Air Pollution Control Plan of Fall 2004 and is aimed at achieving a fast reduction in particulate air pollution (PM 10).
