SMS Demag to Supply Cold Mill, Continuous Process Lines for Baoshan

Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. Special Steel Branch (BSSB), China, has placed an order with SMS Demag to supply continuous annealing and pickling lines for hot and cold strip, as well as a 20-roll cold mill.

The annealing and pickling lines will incorporate a flexible plant configuration capable of accommodating the demanding, high-performance materials the group intends to process. The annealing and pickling lines will not be coupled, but will be capable of independently processing cold and hot strip. Each of the two lines will be designed for an annual production of around 160,000 tonnes.

The 20-roll cold mill will roll the annealed and pickled strips down from their maximum entry gages of 7.1 mm to minimum final gages of 0.3 mm; strip widths will range from 600 to 1300 mm.  Boasting a total drive power of 9700 kW, the series MB 22B-52“ MonoBlock stand will be capable of a maximum rolling speed of 600 meters/minute.

Baoshan’s Special Steel Branch will use the new lines to process strips in special grades such as nickel- and titanium-based alloys and special stainless steels. As part of its extension of production capacities for special and stainless steel grades, Baoshan had previously ordered a Steckel rolling mill from SMS Demag in summer 2007.

Strips produced on the new lines will be used in the manufacture of tubes and pipes, boilers and pressure vessels, and in shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, steel building construction, and bridge-building. The steel must satisfy stringent requirements for anticorrosion and anti-wear.

The new process lines will go into operation in Shanghai in early 2010.
