Algoma Calls for Redemption of 1% Convertible Notes
25 August 2004 - Algoma Steel Inc. has called for the redemption on September 30, 2004 of all of its outstanding 1% convertible secured Notes due 2030 at a redemption price equal to the principal amount of the Notes plus accrued interest. Approximately $12.9 million (U.S.) of the Notes remain outstanding.
Stelco Hires Casey to Sell Hamilton Plate Mill
25 August 2004 - Stelco has hired Casey Equipment as Exclusive Sales Agent for the sale of a 148-inch Mesta plate mill.
Steel Dynamics Appoints Vice President for Bar Products Division
25 August 2004 - Steel Dynamics, Inc. has appointed Glenn Pushis to the position of Vice President and General Manager of the Bar Products Division. Pushis has served as General Manager of that division since it was formed in January of 2003.
Cascade Steel President to Retire
24 August 2004 - Robert W. Philip, Chairman and CEO of Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. announced the intention of Kurt Zetzsche, President of Cascade Steel Rolling Mills, Inc. to retire Nov. 5, 2004, shortly after his 65th birthday.
New General Managers Named at Three U. S. Steel Facilities
24 August 2004 - United States Steel Corp. announced changes in the leadership at Gary Works, Mon Valley Works and Fairfield Works. The new appointments are effective September 1, concurrent with the promotion of George F. Babcoke, General Manager of Gary Works, to Managing Director of Engineering and Research.
Cleveland-Cliffs Announces Ratification of Contracts
24 August 2004 - United Steelworker-represented employees at the Empire and Tilden Mines in Michigan, and Hibbing Taconite and United Taconite Mines in Minnesota, have ratified new four-year labor agreements. Cleveland-Cliffs manages and holds substantial equity positions in all four mines.
U. S. Steel Announces New Managing Director of Engineering and Research
24 August 2004 - United States Steel Corp. announced the appointment of George F. Babcoke to Managing Director of Engineering and Research, effective September 1.
Coalition Announces Grand Calumet and Indiana Harbor Settlement
23 August 2004 - U. S. Steel, part of a coalition of eight companies, announced last week an historic agreement regarding plans for environmental restoration of the East Branch of the Grand Calumet River and the Indiana Harbor Canal System. The agreement, which should expedite work on the area's natural resources and habitats, settles a natural resources damages claim brought by the state of Indiana and two federal agencies against companies whose operations had allegedly had an adverse effect on the area's environment. The settlement involves eight of the companies.
U. S. Steel Names General Manager of Public Affairs
20 August 2004 - United States Steel Corp. announced the appointment of Charles L. "Chuck" Rice to the position of General Manager—Public Affairs, effective Sept. 1, 2004.
NLRB Announces End to Rocky Mountain Steel Mills Labor Dispute
20 August 2004 - The Denver Regional Office of the National Labor Relations Board (Region 27) announced the resolution of the unfair labor practice litigation between that Agency, Rocky Mountain Steel Mills and the United Steelworkers of America.
SSINA to Steel Caucus: U.S. Specialty Metals Industry at Risk
20 August 2004 - The long-term survival of a once-vibrant and healthy American specialty metals industry faces serious risks, according to Dr. Jack W. Shilling, chairman of the Specialty Steel Industry of North America. This assessment and ways to fix the problem were presented by Shilling in testimony at a field hearing organized by the Senate and House Steel Caucus.
AISI Chairman Details Challenges to Domestic Industry
20 August 2004 - “We are witnessing major structural changes in the steel industry, which can be described accurately as both ‘revolutionary’ and predictable,” American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Chairman David S. 20 August 2004 - Bayou Steel Corp. reported net income of $6.1 million on sales of $59.3 million for its third fiscal quarter ending June 30, 2004.
Charter to Add New Meltshop to Cleveland SBQ Mill
20 August 2004 - Officials from Charter Steel announced that the company will be starting construction on a new meltshop facility on the site of its SBQ bar and rod rolling mill in Cuyahoga Heights, near Cleveland, Ohio.
2004 Steel Shipments Continue to Surpass 2003 Totals
19 August 2004 - U.S. steel mills shipped 9,671,000 net tons in June 2004, according to the latest data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). June shipments represent an 11.3% increase from the 8,692,000 net tons shipped in June 2003, and a 5.2% increase from the 9,194,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, May 2004.

Northwest Pipe Announces Major Order
18 August 2004 - Northwest Pipe Co. was recently named by Las Vegas Paving of Las Vegas, Nev., to supply more than $20 million of welded steel pipe for the Yolo Force Main, a project for the Sacramento County Regional Sanitation District.
CITT Finds Injury from Stainless Steel Wire
18 August 2004 - The Canadian International Trade Tribunal has conducted an inquiry to determine whether injury has been caused or threatened by the dumping in Canada of cold drawn and annealed stainless steel round wire from the Republic of Korea, Switzerland and the United States of America, and the subsidizing of such product from India. The inquiry included stainless wire up to and including 0.300 inches (7.62 mm) in maximum solid cross-sectional dimension.
