2004 Steel Shipments Continue to Surpass 2003 Totals
08/19/2004 - U.S. steel mills shipped 9,671,000 net tons in June 2004, according to the latest data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). June shipments represent an 11.3% increase from the 8,692,000 net tons shipped in June 2003, and a 5.2% increase from the 9,194,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, May 2004.

June shipments represent an 11.3% increase from the 8,692,000 net tons shipped in June 2003, and a 5.2% increase from the 9,194,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, May 2004.

For the first six months of 2004, steel shipments were 57,573,000 net tons, representing a 10.9% increase from the 51,924,000 net tons shipped during the same period in 2003.
A year-to-year comparison of shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:
- Service centers and distributors, +4.3%.
- Automotive, +5.9%.
- Construction and contractors’ products, +9.2%.
- Oil and gas, +10.2%.
- Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, +15.4%.
- Appliances, utensils and cutlery, +5.3%.
- Containers, packaging and shipping materials, +2.9%.
- Electrical equipment, –6.1%.
