November World Crude Steel Production Slips 2.8% from Previous Month

21 December 2010 - World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association stood at an estimated 114.12 million tonnes in November 2010 — a 2.8% decrease from the previous month (October 2010) and a 5.1% increase vs. November 2009.

Insteel Industries Consolidates Northeast Facilities

20 December 2010 - Insteel Industries, Inc. is closing its facility in Wilmington, Del., and moving the manufacturing to its Hazleton, Pa., plant. The company anticipates that operations at the Wilmington facility will cease by the end of March 2011 and the equipment will be redeployed to other Insteel locations.

20 December 2010 - An Arbitration Panel has decided in favor of Cliffs Mining Co. regarding an iron ore pricing dispute between Essar Steel Algoma and Cleveland Cliffs. Essar Steel Algoma intends to file a court application to vacate the award on the basis that the Arbitration Panel exceeded its jurisdiction.

Metal Shipments Rise Sharply in November

17 December 2010 - North American metals service center shipments of steel and aluminum products rose significantly in November, perhaps signaling the beginning of a sturdier recovery for the metals industry, according to the latest Metals Activity Report from the Metals Service Center Institute.

Nucor Announces Guidance for Q4 Earnings

17 December 2010 - Nucor Corp. announced guidance for its fourth quarter ending December 31, 2010, which supports the company’s qualitative guidance from late October that "the fourth quarter may indeed turn out to be the most challenging quarter of the year." The company expects Q4 results to be in the range of a loss of $0.10 to $0.15 per diluted share.

October Steel Shipments down 7.2% from September

17 December 2010 - U.S. steel mills shipped 6,629,195 net tons for the month of October 2010, a 7.2% decrease from the previous month’s shipments and an 8.7% increase from the 6,097,348 net tons shipped in October 2009, according to the latest report from AISI.

Steel Dynamics Declares Quarterly Cash Dividend, Provides Q4 Guidance

17 December 2010 - Steel Dynamics' board of directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.075 per common share, payable on or about January 14, 2011. The company also expects fourth quarter earnings per diluted share, before certain asset impairment charges related to its fabrication operations, to be in the range of $0.05 to $0.10.

YTD Stainless, Specialty Imports up More than 70% through September

15 December 2010 - Total stainless steel imports reached 463,783 tons in YTD September 2010, a 72.6% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty steel — stainless, alloy tool and electrical steel — reached 593,200 tons through the same period, a 69.9% increase.

ArcelorMittal Receives Regulatory Approvals to Acquire Baffinland Iron Mines

14 December 2010 - Ohio Laser LLC has opened a new dedicated laser tube cutting and laser pipe cutting facility on its ISO-9001:2008 manufacturing campus. The standalone building is suitable for producing racks, frames, trusses, supports, manifolds, and other items made from cut tubes and other metal fabrications.

ThyssenKrupp Opens Steelmaking and Processing Plant in Alabama

13 December 2010 - Following three years of construction, the new steelmaking and processing plant of ThyssenKrupp Steel USA and ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA has officially opened in Alabama. ThyssenKrupp invested US$5 billion in the overall complex, $3.6 billion for the carbon flat steel facilities and $1.4 billion for the stainless area.

ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA to Begins Construction of EAF Meltshop

13 December 2010 - ThyssenKrupp AG Executive Board Chairman Dr. Ekkehard Schulz announces that construction is set to begin on a new stainless slab meltshop for ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA. The shop will comprise a 160-ton EAF, 180-ton AOD converter, and 72-inch continuous slab caster.
