YTD Stainless, Specialty Imports up More than 70% through September
12/15/2010 - Total stainless steel imports reached 463,783 tons in YTD September 2010, a 72.6% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty steel — stainless, alloy tool and electrical steel — reached 593,200 tons through the same period, a 69.9% increase.
Total stainless steel imports reached 463,783 tons in YTD September 2010, a 72.6% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
Total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 593,200 tons through the same period, a 69.9% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period.
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD September 2010 compared to the same 2009 nine-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
YTD September 2010 stainless steel sheet/strip imports were 277,635 tons, a 83.6% increase compared to YTD September 2009. U.S. consumption was 920,230 tons through the same period, a 32.4% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 30.2%, an 8.4 percentage point increase from 2009.
YTD September 2010 stainless steel plate imports were 59,507 tons, a 98.8% increase compared to YTD September 2009. U.S. consumption was 180,216 tons through the same period, a 37.6% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 33.0%, a 10.1 percentage point increase from 2009.
YTD September 2010 stainless steel bar imports were 76,326 tons, a 36.7% increase compared to YTD September 2009. U.S. consumption was 158,145 tons through the same period, a 42.5% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 48.3%, a 2.0 percentage point decrease from 2009.
YTD September 2010 stainless steel rod imports in YTD September 2010 were 17,813 tons, a 88.4% increase compared to YTD September 2009. U.S. consumption was 49,077 tons through the same period, a 93.4% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 36.3%, a 0.9 percentage point decrease from 2009.
YTD September 2010stainless steel wire imports in YTD September 2010 were 32,502 tons, a 45.8% increase compared to YTD September 2009; U.S. consumption was 35,884 tons, a 16.0% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 90.6%, a 18.5 percentage point increase from 2009.
Through YTD September 2010, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 463,783 tons, a 72.6% increase compared to YTD September 2009; U.S. consumption was 1,343,551 tons, a 35.3% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 34.5%, a 7.4 percentage point increase from 2009.
YTD September 2010 alloy tool steel imports were 59,054 tons, a 119.9% increase compared to YTD September 2009. U.S. consumption and import penetration for the period were not calculable.
YTD September 2010 electrical steel imports in YTD September 2010 were 70,363 tons, a 31.4% increase compared to YTD September 2009. U.S. consumption was 144,247 tons through the same period, an 8.8% decrease from YTD September 2009, while nine-month import penetration was 48.8%, a 15.0 percentage point increase from 2009.
Through YTD September 2010, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 593,200 tons, a 69.9% increase compared to YTD September 2009. U.S. consumption was 1,523,528 tons through the same period, a 30.4% increase, while nine-month import penetration was 38.9%, a 9.0 percentage point increase from 2009.
