October Steel Shipments down 7.2% from September

U.S. steel mills shipped 6,629,195 net tons for the month of October 2010, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
 
The October total represents a 7.2% decrease from the 7,140,369 net tons shipped in the previous month (September 2010) and an 8.7% increase from the 6,097,348 net tons shipped in October 2009. 
 
For the year to date, shipments are 69,783,780 tons, a 42.7% increase vs. 2009 shipments of 48,888,095 for the comparable ten-month period.  2010 shipments through October would annualize at 83.7 million tons.
 
A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes:
 
·         Hot dip galvanized sheet and strip, down 11%
·         Hot rolled sheet, down 10%
·         Cold rolled sheet, down 9%
 
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. The Institute comprises 24 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 140 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
