Storage Dome Collapse at Nucor Steel Louisiana Delays Start-Up of DRI Facility

26 September 2013 - Nucor Corporation announced that on the afternoon of 25 September a storage dome collapsed at Nucor Steel Louisiana in St. James Parish. There were no injuries and no environmental impact. Nucor Steel Louisiana is finishing construction of its new direct reduced iron (DRI) plant on the site and had planned to begin production within a few weeks. Based on a preliminary assessment, the company is currently forecasting the start-up of operations to be delayed until the end of the year.

EVRAZ VÍTKOVICE Granted Permit to Operate Steel Mill

26 September 2013 - EVRAZ VÍTKOVICE STEEL, a.s. (EVS) in the Czech Republic has been granted an integrated permit for the operation of the steel mill from the Regional Authority of the Moravian-Silesian Region. Thanks to this permit EVS can continue to operate the steel mill with an obligation to implement the secondary dedusting of the convertor hall in the steel mill within next two years. The permit includes the obligation to perform other technical and organizational measures that help to further reduce emissions from the steel production.

ArcelorMittal Ostrava Gains EU Funding for Environmental Investments

26 September 2013 - ArcelorMittal’s steel plant in the Czech Republic is co-funding its environmental projects through European Union funds, for the first time in the company’s history. ArcelorMittal Ostrava will use the funding to commission new, cleaner technologies worth CZK 2.6 billion (US$136.7 million) by 2016.

AISI: Preliminary U.S. Steel Imports Rose 14% in August

25 September 2013 - Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that the U.S. imported a total of 2,870,000 tons of steel in August, including 2,199,000 tons of finished steel (up 13.9% and 9.8%, respectively, vs. July final data). Year-to-date (YTD) total and finished steel imports are 21,123,000 and 16,569,000 tons, respectively, down 9% and 7% vs. 2012.
