VA Tech Division Analysis for 2003

25 March 2004 - The Power Generation Division (VA Tech HYDRO) remained stable and again reported improved key figures. In Europe, development of combined cycle power plants profited from alternative investments (decommissioned power plants) and from a renewed demand for additional capacity. Hydropower as a renewable source of energy was able to maintain its leading position and also plays an important role in the climate protection goals of Kyoto. This led to an increase of the order intake amounting to almost 4% from EUR 1,011 m in 2002 to EUR 1,049 m in 2003 and for an EBIT improvement to EUR 58.1 m from EUR 56.5 m in 2003. Net liquidity and cash flow are also at a high level.

Settlement Reached in U.S. Steel Kosice Production Cap Dispute

20 March 2004 - United States Steel Corp. confirmed an announcement by Slovak Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen that an agreement had been reached resolving a dispute regarding the effective date of limitations upon the production of flat-rolled products at U. S. Steel's Kosice, Slovakia, subsidiary.

OSHA Penalizes Sheffield Steel for Failing to Correct Safety Violations

05 March 2004 - The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued citations to Sheffield Steel Corp. of Sand Springs, Okla., for failing to correct previous safety violations. The Department has proposed $81,500 in penalties for the alleged violations.

Steel Imports on the Rise Again in January

25 February 2004 - Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that imports of steel into the United States were up 35% over December 2003 imports. Finished steel imports were up by 24% over the same time period. This was the highest figure for total steel imports since January 2003 and the highest figure for finished steel imports since March of last year.

Slater Steel Reaches Agreement on Sale of Sorel Forge

04 February 2004 - Sorel Forge Inc., a subsidiary of Slater Steel, has entered into a definitive agreement to sell substantially all of its assets, on a going-concern basis, to the Tricap Restructuring Fund. The transaction, which is expected to close on, or about, March 1, 2004, is subject to certain conditions, including approval from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Steel Imports Down Through the End of 2003

28 January 2004 - Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that December imports of steel into the United States were 10.7% lower than in November, with finished imports down 5.8% compared to November. For 2003 as a whole, total and finished steel imports are down 29.6 and 23.7% respectively, compared to 2002.
