American Iron and Steel Institute

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 23 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and approximately 125 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. AISI's member companies represent over three quarters of both U.S. and North American steel capacity.

U.S. Steel Imports Dropped 6% in May

27 June 2012 - The U.S. imported a total of 2,945,000 tons of steel in May, including 2,323,000 tons of finished steel (down 6% each, respectively, from April final data). The 2.3 million tons of finished steel imports in May was the second highest monthly total in 2012, below only the April tonnage.

17 May 2012 - U.S. steel mills shipped 8,512,825 net tons for the month of March 2012, a 1.3% increase from the 8,407,343 net tons shipped in the previous month according to the latest release from AISI.

Finished Steel Imports Up 11% in April

03 May 2012 - Total steel import permit applications reached 3,074,000 net tons for the month of April, a 5% decrease from the 3,248,000 permit tons recorded in March according to the latest report from AISI. Import tonnage for finished steel was up 11% over the same period.

Preliminary Steel Imports Up 7% in March

26 April 2012 - The U.S. imported a total of 2,899,000 net tons of steel in March, up 7% from February final data according to the latest report AISI. Finished steel imports were up 4% through the same period.

February Steel Shipments Down 1.1% from January

05 April 2012 - The U.S. imported a total of 3,144,000 net tons of steel in March, up 22% from February final data, according to the latest report from AISI. Finished steel imports were up 21% over the same period.

Preliminary Steel Imports Decline 5% in February

28 March 2012 - The U.S. imported a total of 2,689,000 net tons of steel in February, down 5% from January final data, according to the latest report from AISI. Finished steel imports were down 7% through the same period.
