Zekelman Industries Looks to Carve Out a Space in the Modular Construction Market
12/01/2016 - Pipe and tube maker Zekelman Industries has created a new business unit that focuses on modular construction, the company announced on Thursday.
Called Z Modular, the division brings together VectorBloc Corp., Z Modular Fabrication and Connexio Building Systems Inc., which together will design, build and install modular facilities.
“An increasing number of construction companies and engineers are exploring the use of modular construction methods to improve quality and efficiency at construction sites. Therefore, Zekelman Industries decided to leverage its vast product portfolio and knowledge of the construction industry to create this new division to meet these new demands,” the company said in a statement.
It added that the business unit can make 90 percent of the steel-related materials used in modular units. That includes hollow structural sections in the frames, the steel conduit in the electrical raceways and the steel pipe in mechanical applications.
Mickey McNamara, Zekelman Industries executive vice president, has been tasked with leading Z Modular as its president. He’ll also maintain his current duties.
"As developers, facility owners and construction companies look for new ways to reduce costs, build more efficiently, and generate revenue faster, modular construction systems are gaining more traction. Because we utilize steel in our module frames, Z Modular is uniquely positioned to help those companies realize even greater benefits and build to newer heights than traditional modular methods," McNamara said.
