04/08/2008 - AK Steel's Zanesville Works is honored by the Safety and Hygiene division of the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, and for its positive impact in the local community by the Muskingum Growth Partnership.
AK Steel's Zanesville Works recently was honored for its safety performance by the Safety and Hygiene division of the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, and for its positive impact in the local community by the Muskingum Growth Partnership.
The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation presented Zanesville Works with two awards in recognition of its safety performance: the 100% Award for operating the entire year of 2007 without a lost-time injury; and, a Special Award for working 2,297,819 hours without a lost-time injury, from April 21, 2003 through December 31, 2007.
The safety awards were presented in conjunction with the Zanesville-Muskingum County Safety Council as part of the annual meeting of the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce. During the same meeting, AK Steel was also presented with Muskingum Growth Partnership’s Award for Community and Economic Success (ACES), honoring the company's positive community impact through its investment in the Zanesville plant.
"We congratulate our Zanesville employees for their exceptional safety achievements, especially for working well over four years without a single lost-time injury," said James L. Wainscott, AK Steel’s Chairman, President and CEO. "We also greatly appreciate being recognized for the company's positive impact in the community."
AK Steel has invested approximately $30 million in the Zanesville Works in recent years to upgrade and modify production equipment. The expenditures were part of the company's expansion of production capabilities for high value-added, grain-oriented electrical steels.
In late 2007, AK Steel announced it would make additional capital investments in the Zanesville plant and at its Butler Works totaling $180 million to further expand electrical steel production capacity. This latest project marks the fourth expansion of AK Steel's electrical steel capacity since 2004. According to the company, these capital investments are aimed at helping it meet growing worldwide demand for its high quality steels used in electrical generation and distribution applications.
AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steels, primarily for automotive, appliance, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets. The company employs about 6500 men and women in Middletown, Mansfield, Coshocton and Zanesville, Ohio; Butler, Pa.; Ashland, Ky.; Rockport, Ind.; and its corporate headquarters in West Chester, Ohio.
AK Tube LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of AK Steel, employs about 300 men and women in plants in Walbridge, Ohio, and Columbus, Ind. AK Tube produces carbon and stainless electric resistance welded (ERW) tubular steel products for truck, automotive and other markets.
