YTD Stainless Steel Imports up 66% Through June 2010

Total stainless steel imports reached 291,841 tons in YTD June 2010, a 66.0% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
 
Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 371,887 tons through the same period, a 56.1% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period.
 
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD June 2010 compared to the same 2009 six-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
 
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD June 2010 imports were 174,740 tons, an 81.7% increase compared to YTD June 2009. U.S. consumption was 631,035 tons, a 53.9% increase, while six-month import penetration was 27.7%, a 4.2 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Stainless steel plate YTD June 2010 imports were 35,149 tons, a 90.0% increase compared to YTD June 2009. U.S. consumption was 114,021 tons through the same period, a 36.4% increase, while six-month import penetration was 30.8%, an 8.7 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Stainless steel bar YTD June 2010 imports were 48,996 tons, a 20.0% increase compared to YTD June 2009. U.S. consumption was 101,956 tons through the same period, a 31.0% increase, while six-month import penetration was 48.1%, a 4.3 percentage point decrease from 2009.
 
Stainless steel rod YTD June 2010 imports were 11,682 tons, a 103.9% increase compared to YTD June 2009. U.S. consumption was 30,489 tons through the same period, a 118.7% increase, while six-month import penetration was 38.3%, a 2.8 percentage point decrease from 2009.
 
Stainless steel wire YTD June 2010 imports were 21,275 tons, a 45.9% increase compared to YTD June 2009. U.S. consumption was 26,181 tons through the same period, a 24.4 % increase, while six-month import penetration was 81.3%, a 12.0 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Through YTD June 2010, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 291,841 tons, a 66.0% increase compared to YTD June 2009. U.S. consumption was 903,682 tons through the same period, a 49.0% increase, while six-month import penetration was 32.3%, a 3.3 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Alloy tool steel YTD June 2010 imports were 34,821 tons, a 74.7% increase compared to YTD June 2009. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
 
Electrical steel YTD June 2010 imports were 45,225 tons, a 6.3% increase compared to YTD June 2009. U.S. consumption was 104,736 tons through the same period, a 12.4% decrease from YTD June 2009, while six-month import penetration was 43.2%, a 7.6 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Through YTD June 2010, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 371,887 tons, a 56.1% increase compared to YTD June 2009. U.S. consumption was 1,030,069 tons through the same period, a 39.2% increase, while six-month import penetration was 36.1%, a 3.9 percentage point increase from 2009.
