Xingtai Steel Grants Acceptance Certificate for Hebei Province Steelworks

Xingtai Iron & Steel Corp., Ltd., China, recently awarded Siemens VAI Metals Technologies the final acceptance certificate for secondary steelmaking facilities and a four-strand continuous billet caster, part of a new steelworks in the Hebei Province for producing stainless and special steels.

The secondary steelmaking facilities for the Xingtai Steel steelworks comprise a 50-tonne AOD converter and a 50-tonne ladle furnace. Siemens VAI was responsible for the engineering and the supply of key components for the AOD, such as the tilting drive, valve station, rotary joint, tuyeres and hydraulic components. Siemens VAI Also supplied the hydraulic systems and other components for the ladle furnace, including electrode carrier arms, the high-current system, and transformers. The scope of supply also included the basic (level 1) and process automation (level 2), including metallurgical process models for both plants.

The new four-strand continuous caster is designed to cast rectangular and round billets — around 200,000 tonnes of stainless and 150,000 tonnes of special steels per annum. Siemens VAI supplied the special equipment and technology packages, including LevCon mold level control, DynaFlex for the hydraulic online setting of the oscillation parameters, and DiaMold tube casting molds to support high-speed casting. The caster also features air-mist nozzles in four zones to ensure optimum strand cooling as well as electromagnetic coils in and under the mold to ensure a homogenized structure.

Within the scope of this project, Siemens Ltd. China handled the locally manufactured items, and supplied some key components for the AOD converter and the ladle furnace, as well as electrical equipment and the basic automation for the steel works.

Xingtai Steel has an annual production capacity of around three million tonnes of low alloy and high-carbon steels. The company is one of China's leading producers of high-quality special wire and bar steel, and a supplier of special steels for the automotive and other industries.
