The program, now in its fifth year, commends steel producers that are “most clearly demonstrating their commitment and action to sustainable development,” according to a press release from worldsteel.
 
The 2022 Steel Sustainability Champions are ArcelorMittal, BlueScope Steel Ltd., JFE Steel Corp., JSW Steel Ltd., Nippon Steel Corp., POSCO, Tata Steel Europe, Tata Steel Ltd., Tenaris and Ternium.
 
This marks the fifth consecutive year that Tata Steel Europe, Tata Steel Ltd. and Tenaris have been champions. This year is the first that POSCO has been recognized.
 
To become eligible to be recognized as a Sustainability Champion, a steel-producing company must sign worldsteel’s newly launched Sustainability Charter, which covers environment, social, governance and economic criteria. In addition to signing the charter, a company must also provide life cycle inventory data to worldsteel’s data collection program, and be shortlisted in one of the five Steelie Awards categories or be recognized in the worldsteel Safety and Health Recognition Programme.
