World Steel Production up 24% in November

Figures released by the World Steel Association show that world crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting stood at an estimated 107.48 million tonnes in November 2009 — 5.2% lower than the previous month (October 2009) but 24.2% higher than November 2008.
 
Despite an 8.7% decrease in production vs. the previous month, production in China was still 37.4% higher vs. November 2008, down from a 42.4% year-on-year increase the previous month. China’s November production, at 47.26 million tonnes, represents approximately 47.3% of total November world crude steel production. Excluding China’s production, production for the balance of the world increased about 15.6% vs. November 2008.

For the year to date, China’s production has reached 518.2 million tonnes, a 12.1% increase vs. YTD 2008. This compares to double-digit year-on-year YTD losses for many of the other world regions including North America (-37.4%), EU(27) (-33.2%), Oceania (-32.3%), South America (-24.3%), C.I.S. (-18.4%), Africa (-16.0%), and Other Europe (-10.9%). Small year-on-year YTD increases were also recorded for all of Asia (+2.0%) and the Middle East (+2.6%).
 
Weighing in at 62.1% of total world production for November 2009, production in Asia stood at 66.78 million tonnes in November, 25.6% higher than in November 2008. Representing 47.4% of world production for November, Chinese production was reported at 47.26 million tonnes in November, a 37.4% increase compared to November 2008, and a 8.7% decrease compared to the previous month (October 2009). Taiwan (+15.6%) and South Korea (+7.5%) logged the region’s largest percentage increases vs. November 2008.

For the year to date, Asia reported the production of 706.8 million tonnes of crude steel, a 2.0% increase vs. YTD 2008.
 
The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 14.15 million tonnes of crude steel in November, up 10.8% from November 2008. Comparing November 2009 to November 2008, crude steel production fell by 17.2% in Italy and by 10.6% in Slovenia, but increased by 27.1% in Slovakia, by 27.2% in France, and by 104.3% in Luxembourg. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 13.2% of the total reported world production in November 2009, up from 12.6% the previous month.
 
For the year to date, EU(27) reported the production of 126.31 million tonnes of crude steel, a 33.2% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
 
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.51 million tonnes in November, an increase of 20.9% compared to November 2008. The most significant decrease was recorded in Norway(-17.9%) while increases were reported by Bosnia-Herzegovina (+68.5%), Serbia (+108.1%), and Croatia (+245.8%). Altogether, the countries in Other Europe contributed 2.3% of the total reported world production in November 2009, down slightly from 2.4% in the previous month.
 
For the year to date, Other Europe reported the production of 26.10 million tonnes of crude steel, a 10.9% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
 
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 8.66 million tonnes in November, reflecting a 50.0% increase compared to November 2008. While Moldova reported a 33.3% decrease vs. November 2008, most other countries reported increases, including Russia (+42.6), Ukraine (+67.1%), and Kazakhstan (+141.2%). Altogether, the CIS countries contributed 8.1% of the total reported world production in November 2009, up slightly from 8.0% of the previous month’s total.
 
For the year to date, CIS reported the production of 88.47 million tonnes of crude steel, an 18.4% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
 
North American production totaled 8.43 million tonnes in November, a 30.7% increase in comparison to November 2008. Comparing November 2009 to November 2008, the largest increases were recorded in El Salvador (+218.2%), Trinidad and Tobago (+132.8%), Canada (+55.7%), Guatemala (+32.7%), and Mexico (+31.3%). Altogether, the North American countries contributed 7.8% of the total reported world production in November 2009, up from 7.1% in the previous month.
 
For the year to date, North America reported the production of 74.61 million tonnes of crude steel, a 37.4% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
 
South American production for November 2009 totaled 3.72 million tonnes, a 13.8% increase compared to November 2008. The largest percentage decrease took effect in Paraguay (-25.9%), while the largest increases were reported for Chile (+95.9%), Colombia (+58.9%), and Ecuador (+43.7%). Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.5% of the total reported world production in November 2009, virtually unchanged from the previous month.
 
For the year to date, South America reported the production of 34.11 million tonnes of crude steel, a 24.3% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
 
Production in Africa totaled 1.26 million tonnes in November 2009, a 14.7% increase compared to November 2008. Comparing November 2009 to November 2008, the largest percentage decreases were recorded in Libya (-41.7%) and Algeria (-25.5%), and the largest increases were recorded by South Africa (+43.4%) and Morocco (+110.3%). The African countries contributed 1.2% of the total reported world production in November 2009, up slightly from 1.1% the previous month.
 
For the year to date, Africa reported the production of 13.48 million tonnes of crude steel, a 16.0% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
 
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.30 million tonnes in November 2009, a 5.7% increase compared to November 2008. Comparing November 2009 to November 2008, the largest percentage decrease was recorded in Qatar (-12.2%) and the largest percentage increase was recorded in Saudi Arabia (+29.9%). Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.2% of the total reported world production in November 2009, down slightly from 1.3% the previous month.
 
For the year to date, the Middle East reported the production of 15.20 million tonnes of crude steel, a 2.6% increase vs. YTD 2008.
 
Production in Oceania totaled 0.67 million tonnes in November 2009, a 2.7% increase compared to November 2008. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.7% of the total reported world production in November 2009, up slightly from 0.6% in the previous month.
 
For the year to date, Oceania reported the production of 5.36 million tonnes of crude steel, a 32.3% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
