World Steel Association Announces 8th Virtual Steelmaking Challenge

Each year since 2005, the World Steel Association (worldsteel) has hosted the steeluniversity Virtual Steelmaking Challenge, where students and young industry employees can test their skills using the sophisticated online process simulations. The contestants are given the task of producing a specified grade of steel or product at the lowest cost within a period of 24 hours using simulations available at steeluniversity.org. Over the years, the competition has attracted an ever increasing number of participants from 26 countries.
In addition to the trophy and cash prizes, the winners are recognized as among the global industry’s promising new generation of metallurgists. The Challenge is regarded by the steel companies as a great opportunity for attracting bright graduates and identifying and rewarding in-company talent.
The last Virtual Steelmaking Challenge was the 7th in the series and attracted over 1,000 entrants from 26 countries in the 'qualifying round' held online in November 2012. The 5 Regional Champions identified in each of the 'Student' and 'Industry' categories were invited to take part with full sponsorship of their travel in the Grand Final held in Feb 2013 in Brussels. Highlights of this event are available here.
As usual there are two entry categories for the Challenge: Student and Industry and there will be separate prizes for each of them. The event will take place in two rounds:
  • Round 1: Regional Championship will take place online at 12:00 GMT on 12 November 2013 for 24 hours.

It is possible to take part as an individual or as a team and the entrants can make as many attempts as they want during the 24 hour period.
At the end of this round, Regional Champions in the 'Industry' and 'Student' categories will be identified for each of the following regions: North America, Latin America, Europe-CIS, Middle East-India- Africa, and East Asia-Oceania.
