Wheeling-Pittsburgh to Close Allenport Facility

Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. announced plans to close its Allenport, Pa., cold-rolled production facility and idle two of the three galvanizing lines at its Martins Ferry, Ohio, steel processing plant.

The company said it has commenced issuing notice of the closures to employees, as required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

Wheeling Pittsburgh also noted that the closures are consistent with the restructuring plans the company first announced in November, 2007, around the time that Wheeling-Pittsburgh stockholders approved the company’s merger with Esmark, Inc.

Esmark Inc. is a vertically integrated steel producer and distributor, combining steel production capabilities through both blast furnace and electric arc furnace technologies with the just-in-time delivery of value-added steel products to a broad customer base concentrated in the Ohio Valley and Midwest regions.

Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Esmark Inc., produces carbon flat-rolled products for the construction, container, appliance, converter/processor, steel service center, automotive and other markets. The company's products include various sheet products such as hot-rolled, cold-rolled, hot-dipped galvanized, electro-galvanized, black plate, and electrolytic tinplate.
