Wheeling-Pittsburgh Announces Management Promotions

Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. announced the promotion of Ron Shoemaker, who had been Manager of Engineering, EAF Project, to the newly created position of General Manager, Engineering & Environmental Control. In his new position, Shoemaker will report to Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel President, Harry Page.

The company also announced the promotion of Steve Guzy, formerly Division Manager of Hot Strip Rolling and Processing, was promoted to General Manager Primary Operations. Additionally, Glenn Steed, formerly Division Manager of Steelmaking, was promoted to General Manager of Finishing Operations. Both Guzy and Steed will continue to report to Don Keaton, Vice President of Steel Manufacturing and Procurement.

All promotions were effective May 1.

Wheeling-Pittsburgh's promotions come in the midst of the company's planned strategic transition to become a “21st Century”, super-flexible steel producer utilizing the best of both blast furnace and electric arc furnace technology.

The company started up a new ConsteelR continuous steelmaking EAF late last year, producing its first heat on Nov. 29. Hot metal charging into the Consteel furnace was introduced in late April, making it the only EAF in the Western Hemisphere to adopt this practice.

The move to incorporate the new Consteel furnace into the production strategy has helped Wheeling-Pittsburgh to reduce its reliance on its 100-year-old No. 1 Blast Furnace, which was idled in early May.

Commenting on the company’s transition from integrated (blast furnace based) steel production to the new, more flexible combination of the Consteel EAF and blast furnace production, President Harry Page said, "While this is the most visible part of our strategic plan, we also are involved with upgrades in equipment, technology and processes that will allow Wheeling-Pittsburgh to eliminate bottlenecks and meet increased value-added product requirements from our customers.

"Ron, Steve and Glenn are highly knowledgeable and skilled managers who have played key roles for Wheeling-Pittsburgh," Page said. "I look forward to their increased involvement in the successful implementation of our strategic plan. We are fortunate to have this caliber of individuals within our organization."

Shoemaker joined Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in 2000 as Division Manager, Technical Services and Planning, after working at Armco and Armco Specialty Steel for more than 20 years in engineering and operating positions. Most recently, Shoemaker was responsible for the construction and installation of the company's new Consteel Electric Arc Furnace. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky.

Guzy has been with Wheeling-Pittsburgh for 27 years, the past seven as Division Manager of Hot Strip Rolling and Processing. Guzy has a Bachelor of Science Degree from California University of Pennsylvania in business management and economics and has completed a management training program in manufacturing technology from Cornell University.

Steed has 17 years of steel industry experience. At Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, he has been Division Manager of both Steelmaking Division and the Yorkville Plant and was responsible for the production startup of the company's Electric Arc Furnace. Steed has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Ohio State University. Before joined Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in 2000 he was with AK Steel's Ashland, Ky., works where he had a series of increasingly responsible positions.
