Wheeling Corrugating Bridge Deck Showing up in Construction Projects

Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel reports that steel deck made by the company's Wheeling Corrugating Company (WCC) will be used in many highway projects locally and throughout the United States.

Bridge deck, made from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel produced steel and roll formed at WCC's Beech Bottom, W.Va., and Warren, Ohio, plants, is used as a stay-in-place form.

Cement is then poured into the deck form, producing the highway surface.

Nationally, 128,000 square feet of WCC bridge deck will be used to build the Hoover Dam Bypass, a 1,900 foot-long, four-lane bridge that spans the Colorado River about 1,500 feet downstream of the Hoover Dam. The 3.5-mile corridor linking Clark County, Nev., with Mohave County, Ariz., will replace U.S. 93, the current two-lane highway across the dam. U.S. 93 can no longer adequately handle the 14,000 vehicles that cross it each day, double the volume 15 years ago.

To the East, WCC is providing 110,000 square feet of steel deck to the Missisquoi Bay Bridge project in Grand Island County, Vermont. This 3,600 foot-long bridge spans a bay on Lake Champlain near the Canada border.

Noteworthy projects in the Pittsburgh area include 17 bridge structures being rebuilt on I-79 between the Bridgeville and Route 60 exits. WCC will supply 180,000 square feet of bridge deck to this two-year project that will conclude in 2006.

Other major area projects include the "Findlay Connector" a new four-lane highway that will link U.S. Route 22 to the Pittsburgh International Airport and will include 18 structures requiring WCC bridge deck. Construction on this project, which began last fall, is expected to be completed in 2006.

Construction on a new bridge near Parkersburg, W.Va., linking WV Route 2 with Ohio Route 7 will begin next year. This 4,000-foot-long structure will use 320,000 square feet of WCC bridge deck.

"We are proud to play a part in these high profile bridge projects throughout the United States," said Mike Benson, Manager, Bridge Deck. "But these are no more important than the many hundreds of much smaller bridge projects that cross creeks or shallow ravines that we handle each year."

Locally, Benson notes that WCC bridge deck was used for the 180-foot-long two span bridge over I-70, just outside Wheeling at Cabellas, as well as for a small creek on U.S. 40 (National Road) in Wheeling just west of WV Route 88.
