Volvo, SSAB Partner on Green Steel Development
06/16/2021 - Swedish automaker Volvo will collaborate with SSAB on developing fossil-fuel-free steels for the auto industry, SSAB has said.
According to SSAB, Volvo will buy steel made from the hydrogen-reduced iron to be produced at SSAB’s HYBRIT pilot-scale plant in Sweden. SSAB said the steel will be used for testing purposes and may be featured in a concept car.
“We are building an entirely fossil-free value chain all the way to the end customer,” said Martin Lindqvist, SSAB president and chief executive. “Our breakthrough technology has virtually no carbon footprint and will help strengthen our customers’ competitiveness. Together with Volvo Cars, we aim to develop fossil-free steel products for cars of the future.”
